Guest guest
Hi Everyone, Hannah had surgery today to remove her g-tube for which we are so grateful. There was a time there where we weren't sure if she would ever learn to drink but alas, she has become the " heavy drinker " we've been praying for. At the same time while she was under Dental clinic came in to do a full set of x-rays and do any dental work that needed to be done, and then Radiology came in to do the cervical spine x-rays to screen for atlantal-axial instability. The g-tube surgery went great but the dental surgery unfortunately was quite extensive. After surgery went on for an extra hour and a half I was figuring that she was going to come out with braces! : ) Instead she came out with 5 permanent and 2 baby teeth pulled! : ( Top 6 year molars had HUGE cavities, bottom ones had to come out since they would hitting on gum, other molars they tried to fill and the tooth just started to crumble in the middle, 1 baby tooth was fused and another baby tooth was wiggly so they just went and pulled it. I feel so bad, guilty and helpless and my little kid hurts. She is so orally defensive, it is very difficult to get in there and brush her top teeth especially. I can do the bottom ones ok but not the top ones. My kids mouth looks like that of a toddler with holes everywhere. The dentist says that when the rest of her permanent teeth do come in that there won't be any holes. But I feel like such a bad, neglectful mom. I asked the dentist if he had any resources to help us get over this oral defensiveness stuff and he didn't have any ideas. We use a dog toothbrush to help me get in there and toothpaste with a musical cap that serves as a timer. Have you seen those? They're new by Colgate but you flip open the lid and it plays Yankee Doodle for 70 seconds. So we do it once all the way through for the bottom teeth and then again for the top teeth, but that one's more of a wrestling match. Well, I'm signing off. It has been a day. Thanks in advance for your ideas. a (Drew 12 Tourette's,OCD/ Marissa 8 MCS Middle Child Syndrome/ Hannah 6 DS/Aut)
Guest guest
Hi a, I hope Hannah will feel better in a few days. Zeb's baby teeth were horrible too. He had the dental surgery for extractions. He now has many of his permanent teeth and they look great. Mom to Zeb 11 DS/OCD
Guest guest
Hi Charlene, Hannah is doing better today and I was able to get pain meds in applesauce down her and she even requested a lunchmeat sandwich with her PECS card. Then she slept most of the afternoon. The thing is that 5 of the 7 teeth they extracted were permanent teeth. Of the 2 baby teeth they took out one was a fused tooth and the other was already wiggly so they thought they'd speed up the situation. But that's what bums me out so much is that we lost mostly permanent ones. I did have one hopeful thought I must admit and that was that perhaps now she wouldn't have enough teeth to grind! But she proved me wrong today. Somehow in that sore little holey mouth of hers she found two teeth that would grind! Wouldn't you know it! a Hannah 6 DS/Aut
Guest guest
Hi a, We use the Collis curve toothbrush, which works very well for Brook. Friday we took Brook to University of Ca San Francisco to their pediatric dental clinic, because Brook needs to be put under for his dental care. The pediatric dentist said that Brook's teeth looked to be in very good shape considering how difficult it is to brush, etc. I showed him the colliscurve toothbrush and he said it looked very good to him. My dh uses the colliscurve toothbrush on his teeth every night. You can order the toothbrush online at www.colliscurve.com. We sing to him usually while brushing his teeth. Last January Brook had general anesthesia and had X-rays, teeth cleaned and sealants appplied to the tops of his molars. That helps protect the teeth not only from cavities but from the damage from grinding. We are going to take him in again next year for his routine exam and cleaning under general anesthesia and at the same time he will have 2 teeth extracted that haven't descended. They can develop cysts if they don't come down. We would not have known they were even there if we hadn't put him under and done the x-rays. -- Miles 16, Brook 13, Genevieve
Guest guest
Hi a, Poor Hannah, kids are so resilient though. I know Zeb's baby teeth came in in points. He would bite me all the time to the point that I would pin shoulder pads on my shoulders and down my arms, ouch. His teeth had cavities inbetween the teeth so they capped most of them. I was furious after the surgery when I saw him with a metal mouth. I thought they were going to cap the teeth with natural looking crowns. They said that those crowns don't hold up for children. What exactly is the plan for teeth for Hannah? I was told that many of our kids have such a small oral cavity that many need permanent teeth removed to ease the crowding. I hope this is the case with Hannah. Charlyne Mom to Zeb 11 DS/OCD
