I¹d recommend the Boardmaker program. You can view it at

www.mayer-johnson.com. They are a great resource for all visual

communication needs and augmentative commication devices. I haven¹t

purchased Boardmaker because it¹s expensive and ¹s classroom has it on

their computer so if I need symbols or sheets for her comm device, I usually

just ask ¹s teacher to print me out some. Your school district

probably already has it and if they don¹t they need to buy it for your

child.

Hi Caryn there is a book called - The Picture Exchange Communication System

(PECS) training manual second edition grades pre-k- 6 by Lori A. Frost and

S Bondy. This book is for the actual pecs symbols. On nov 9 I post some

resources of catalogs that sell assistive tech and educational items. You could

reguest a catalog where this resource is or ask the school. The info I just

gave you is from Super Duper Publications and the book sells for $47.95..their

number is 1. If you get private speech they may have a copy in

their dept you could borrow. Hope this helps.

Hi All,

Can anyone reccomend a starter book or computer program for PECS??? The

school has started using PECS Photos and I would like to use some at home.

Is it just a matter of getting a digital camera and laminating photos???

is 5 and non-verbal. He has a difficult time transitioning, I am

thinking that if I can get him to understand using PECS that his outbursts

would decrease.

I would also like to say that I can TOTALLY relate to the mother guilt

issues that are being discussed. I feel like I should be spending more time

" teaching " instead of allowing him to watch videos. But then again I

feel like that with all my kids......if I get a chance to lay down and

cuddle with them during the day it is a wonderful thing, but then I think I

should be reading them a book or doing a puzzle. I can't win!! Oh well

--- such is life.

Thanks,

Caryn

I too use boardmaker and a digital camera to make pictures to help Ethan

transition. I live in Fairfax County in Northern Virginia and was able to

purchase Boardmaker using the counties discounted rate. It has really helped him

know what we are going to do. I make little laminated picture books. For example

for his OT (lots of sensory issues) she took pictures of all of the equipment

she uses with Ethan then I added boardmaker visuals to the book (help, all done,

shoes, etc) When we are going to OT I show him the book with a picture of Tracey

on the cover and while we are driving he thumbs through it on the car ride. Then

Tracey uses it to show him what he is doing next or lets him use the pictures to

choose what he wants to do. I have pictures of all the places we typically go

and now I don't even have to use them all of the time but I have them when I

need them. I hope this helps.

I think the school district uses a digital camera for the PECS Photos.... I

will need to check out the website for the boardmaker program, it might be

cheaper for me to buy a digital camera!!!!

Thanks,

Caryn

Yes, we get funds each year through a program at our local ARC called FDSS

(family driven social services). There's Easter Seals and VAriety Club, and

of course, medical assistance. We even got the school district to pay for

half of Maddie's evaluation at KKI once.

used PECS for awhile. I made his notebook myself instead buying theirs. I

can tell you how I did it if you're interested.
