Hi June I felt for you when you wrote about your fear of an asthma

attack and the bronchoscope - I had a endoscope and know where you

are coming from. The Dr said it was because I was over anxious. The

fact you cant breath AND you cant tell anyone because yr sedated

would make anyone anxious. When my resp spec mentioned bronchoscopy

i headed for the hills. Of course it is very sensible for you to

have one but as a terrible coward myself you will have my complete

admiration, thoughts and prayers. Judy

In a bronchoscopy, they go into your lungs with a suction tube and a camera -so they can see where they are going. They get as far down as they can and suction some of the mucous out. I really don't like them at all - but like I said - if you aren't getting well - it may be your only option. They just found moraxella catarrhalis in my lungs. What a name. I was having a horrible time breathing, I lost my voice and I just couldn't function. Thank God they finally found it and I'm feeling like I want to live again. The best of luck to you and don't rule that bronchoscopy out!a BellingUNMC Department of Surgery983280 Nebraska Medical CenterOmaha, NE 68198-3280(402)559-6784 (phone) (402)559-6749 (fax)

Thanks a, I'm sure you are right the bugs are deep in the lung andno I don't want a Bronchoscophy but this latest test I went 6 weekswithout anti b's and was so ill. Don't feel bad,

This happened to me all the time. A lung wash could show the bug b/c it gets down farther and brings up stuff you might not have coughed out.

They found staph and other buggies with me this way.

Hi June,

I've also had a couple of bronchoscopies. Even though I was quite

nervous before the first one, they really aren't so bad. I woke up

toward the end of the last one and still got through it without a

problem. I felt a little uncomfortable the next day, but nothing I

couldn't handle. They tend to get better samples to culture with

bronchoscopies because they can get the really deep stuff. So, if your

doctor ever says he wants you to have one, don't worry about it too

much--it's not all that bad.

I think the answer is that with a bronch they can get way down where the

bugs are living and what we cough up is what spills over into the healthy

part of our lungs (if I understand the way my doctor explains it). Have

they tried one of those machines to loosen it up for you so maybe you can

get the sputum from lower to run a sample on? Just a suggestion that might

keep you from getting that bronchoscopy - although it sounds like some

people don't have as hard a time with them as I did. Maybe it will be a

breeze for you too!

hi june and all,

this might be a total shot in the dark but are you using an approved sterile specimen container? also is it a specimen

from first thing in the morning before you've had coffee/tea/juice/food etc which could contaminate it.

if you provide a specimen while taking antibx, this is not a true specimen as it will not 'grow' correctly in the lab.

just my experience talking here.......both as a caregiver and a hospital employee ~ retired!!!!!!!!

i wish i had the magic cure, june.......just hang in there, we're here for you........never forget that.

Thanks but yes, I had a sterile pot from the hospital, coughed

up before touching even a sip of water, no antibiotics for 6 weeks till

I was so ill and presented a nice tub of green gunk but no bug! Oh

yeah, well after being half dead all week coughing up gunk and blood

yesterday I had had enough and started on Tetracycline. Today 30 hours

after starting anti biotics my peak flow has improved by 100, the gunk

has gone much paler and my fever has eased. So now let them tell me

there is no bug, if it wasn't there anti b's wouldn't work. I could

scream over this I'm so frustrated they can't find it. All I know is

anti biotics work and somehow I have to convince my doctors I'm on the

right track but how? Thanks for the advice anyway Love June
