Well, Miss Maddie, soon to be 10 (OH LORD I can't bear it) dx'd with autism 5 years ago, likes to dribble a ball 24/7. Or sometimes two at a time...Yep, she's DARNED good. Ever see a person dribble a golf ball??? LOL She makes a click click sound out the back of her teeth 24/7 that sounds like grinding, but isn't. She dangles constantly and can dangle things you never thought danglable (my own coined word)...for instance a tuna sandwich. She used to dangle shoes but has matured into socks. She likes to walk on roofs, climb anything and everything (including people) and run away from home (er, you may have read about her latest adventure recently?) She has pica, so obsesses about eating soap, candles and lately toothpaste. And no, I haven't been committed.......................................................................\ ......................... ............................................................................... .........YET. <<It seems like goes through stages one week he is obsessed with watching doors close>> Yea, Maddie used to go around slamming doors. Now she likes to dump trash cans...so I purchased those stainless steel ones that open with the foot pedal...OH, she's going to be ticked when she comes home today...LOL <<Do you try to stop these behaviors like the dangling? Because that is one quirk that drives me nuts!!>> We've learned to pick and choose our battles with Maddie (just like with our four other kids). Stimming helps her to adapt to new environments or when she's stressed, so we don't mind it if it calms her. Now, ROOF WALKING, RUNNING AWAY FROM HOME AND COMING HOME IN COP CARS? THAT bothers us...;-) <<Also how is your childrens speech?>> Maddie has no speech Annie, not even receptively. She has started to communicate in a much more clear fashion since we started her on risperdal last April. <<Also what type of school setting is your child in?>> Maddie goes to an approved private school that implements the ABA method. We're very happy with the school, except for them never being able to keep a teacher (URGH, Maddie's teacher called this morning to inform me she is leaving...this one has only been here since March). I realize that this classroom generates a high burn-out rate for staff, but JEEZ!!!! Good thing we parents can't quit...LOL Welcome again Annie. Don't mind my style....if I don't laugh, I cry and I'd MUCH rather laugh!!! Donna P.S. You can see my little boo in Joan's DisabilitySolutions issue on DS/autism. She's in there a few times. Guest guest
Donna, Thanks for the welcome! I had to LOL that Maddies dangles things thought undangleable a sandwich! Mikey LOVES to dangle shoes and socks, his new dangler of the week is this silk Spiderman shirt of his. One of his nicknames is Bo_Dangles He has NOT been on our roof yet! OMG I would have had a heart attack! He is an escape artist our house is fort knocks now so he is having a hard time getting out Thank God:) His last escape I was taking my 3 minute shower when I heard 2 car alarms going off I KNEW it was him for some reason I quickly threw on my robe ran outside to see him half way down the block in his underwear. My neighbor told me later that he was in his car and spilled his drink that was left in there. And told me I should keep a better eye on him. GRRRRRRR. This boy is NEVEReout of eyesight for more than 2 minutes. But he's quick and quiet. Anyway I am always thanking his Guardian Angels that are working OT most of the time! We recently switched Mikeys program to a self contained MI program He was included with pull outs for K and 1st. But it's just not for him anymore. Guest guest
Thanks Gail I think it is a bit from both of us, but since I am willing to wait her out, I must be pretty stubborn too Annie > Annie, > Too funny about the sippy cup!!!!!!!!! And the stubbornness comes from Mom > or Dad? LOL > Gail :-) > She just looked at it, & would not touch it. I told her that they > don't make your sippy cups anymore & this is a big girl sippy cup, so this > is the one you'll use. (I figured she would get thirsty sometime).
