Guest guest
Art Therapists are emerging as leaders in diverse communities, utilizing our creativity and vision to break through barriers. That’s why the theme for the Illinois Art Therapy’s Association’s 30th annual conference February 5 and February 6, 2010 is Illuminating the Landscape of Art Therapy and Diverse Community. At this year’s conference, we will examine the many different environments that professional art therapists are working in. The Illinois Art Therapy Association’s Program Committee will be hosting an art making social gathering at the Adler School of Professional Psychology, Friday, February 5, 2010 from 6:30-9PM. This interactive Art Studio experience is “Honoring Our Personal Landscapes: Celebrating the Changing Terrain of our Experiences as Art Therapistsâ€. This exploration will look at our personal stories that build the collective landscape of art therapy. The Illinois Art Therapy Association has sponsered with the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) to provide the central and historical location for the conference. It will be heled at SAIC, 112 S. Michigan Avenue, in Chicago on Saturday, February 6, 2010. The Keynote speaker is a a dynamic woman who has worked as an Expressive Arts Therapist around the world. Founder of Harambee Arts:Let’s Pull Together, Gloria Simoneaux will be presenting on her work breaking boundaries through art in Africa. This project can be found at where it says â€Harambee Arts partners with African grassroots programs to train local caregivers to provide art programs for vulnerable children in an environment that fosters their sense of joy, creativity and exuberance.†She also founded DrawBridge: An Arts Program for Homeless Children in 1989 and she served as Executive Director until December 31, 2007. Since 2000, Ms. Simoneaux has made six trips to Africa where she set up and arts program for children affected by HIV/AIDS in Eritrea , trained HIV positive community health care workers in Tanzanis, worked with orphans and street children in Eastern Ghana and Zimbabwe, trained pre-school teachers and orphanage staff as well as offering individual art therapy sessions to sexually abused orphans in Zimbabwe and Ethiopia. Additionally, we having been working to feature an Educator’s Panel of art therapy educator pioneers-Gussie Klorer, Don Seiden, Judy Sutherland and Harriet Wadeson and moderated by Randy Vick. This will be an opportunity for us to learn about the history of art therapy in Illinois. Please read the attached conference brochure!
