Guest guest
Make Seniors' Homes Safe (Source: Nonpareil online) - Familiar surroundings bring comfort and a sense of security, but they can also pose a threat to older people. Ellie Grossman explains that there are simple and inexpensive steps you can take to increase safety and allow the older person to remain at home. These include: *Examining dark, commonly traveled areas. *Avoiding monochromatic color schemes. *Using lightweight equipment. *Changing doorknobs to levers. *Converting single-bulb light fixtures to multiple bulbs. *Fixing things that are broken (such as towel bars and railings). *Installing a cordless intercom. *Making entrances safe. Grossman says, " People are sometimes resistant to the idea at first. But when they realize that making some simple changes will make it more likely they can stay in their homes, most agree to make them.
