Guest guest
-May, As suggested, research what would happen to you financially should you move to America. While there are disability benefits, each state has a different process. I am a social worker in California, and I help clients apply for disability all the time. Sometimes it can take up to a year before they are accepted. In the meantime they have very little to live on, and with the high expense of living here, they often struggle to make ends meet. Also consider that people who are not citizens of the US, or at the very least legal permanent residents, are not eligible to receive disability benefits (at least not in CA). I would recommend looking into the study abroad program, which would give you a great taste of what it's like to live over here without the final committment of moving permanently until you decide that that is what you want to do. I hate to say it, but the system in the UK is much more supportive of people with disabilities, in my opinion, more supportive of their society in general than over here in the US, where it is very much a " you're on your own " mentality.
