Hi all,

Well, I went to the doctor on Monday...my regular GP since the pain

management doctor " dismissed " me since I couldn't take the

Elavil...geez....anyway....he is trying me on Topamax 50 mg to start

and also Quinine (thanks for the tip). I have been on it since Monday

night (he said to take at bedtime) but I have a bit of a problem with

side effects. During the day I almost feel " carbonated " . I tingle

all over, my legs feel quite weak and I am very sleepy. Is anyone

else on the topamax and did the side effects go away after a bit? I

am ready to just throw in the towel and go off all meds. I don't like

the side effects. I think they make you feel worse than the problems

you take them for!

Alright, enough ranting for this morning. Just wanted to fill you all

in and see if anyone else was on the topamax and what your experiences

with the drug was.

Well, I called the doc this morning and am waiting to hear back from him. I

feel sooooo sick. I am tingly all over (I described it as feeling like a

giant glass of soda), shaky, weak muscles, sick to my stomache, and so tired

that I could curl up and go back to sleep after sleeping for 10 hours last

night. But, I have to say I HAVE NO PAIN. But what is worse???? Oy vey!

Hi Lorrie,

I talked to my doctor today and he cut my dosage in half and said to give it

another week. I hope that the side effects go away because I have been waking

up PAIN FREE. What a wonderful feeling.

Topamax....but I am having some really bad side effects. I tingle all day

long...real irritating. I am a *itch on wheels...can snap for no reason...not

good....my poor husband....and I am very very tired. But, yes there is a but, I

sleep very well and I have NO PAIN. The doctor also gave me quinine. The

quinine is for muscle spasms especially at night and that has been helping also.

Ask you doc. Everyone has different levels of tolerence to medications. You

may not have any side effects at all. Good luck.

Lorrie,

You need to find a new Dr. I ran into the same road block. My regular GP

sent me to a rheumatologist for a diagnosis. She was able to diagnose but not

treat so she then referred me to a pain management doctor. I went to the same

one that my husband has been going to for years for an accident that he had

(fractured skull and badly bruised brain among other things). He concurred that

it was FM and instantly wanted to put me on an anti depressant. Well, I had a

very bad experience with anti depressants about 2 years ago after the birth of

our son. I was having suicidal thoughs and instantly weaned myself off and made

an oath that I would NEVER go back on them. Well, I explained the whole

situation to him and he insisted that I HAD to be depressed--which I'm not.

Plus the Elavil would help me sleep and if I sleep my pain would miraculously go

away. yep, sure. So, I humored him and went on the Elavil. It helped me sleep

alright, so well that I couldn't wake up in the

morning. Now, mind you, we have a 2 year old son that I have to get up with in

the morning. So, I told him this and he promptly told me that there was nothing

more that he could or would do for me. That is when I called my GP and asked if

I could come back and discuss this with him and he told me that he would do

whatever he could for me (beside prescribe narcotics...he won't do that....only

if I am in dire need and he knows that I only ask when I am absolutely dying) I

am very lucky that I have such an understanding doctor that will sit and listen

to me and take me seriously. I know from experience that all doctors aren't

like that. Oh, another thing that the pain management doctor told me..he told

me that he really doesn't do pain management anymore....hmmmm, that's funny

because what does he do for my husband???? PAIN MANAGEMENT?????

Okay, enough ranting for one night...lmao. But, don't give up hope. I am

sure that there is a doctor out there that will sit and listen and take you

seriously. Just keep looking. Good luck and please keep me posted. My email

address is joannvasile@... if you would like to keep in touch outside

the group.

Butch,

Lol I'm not itching from the meds.....put a B in front of it....I was trying

to be delicate on here....lol. I have to say, the side effects are diminishing

and am feeling alot better....not to mention the 7 pound weight loss since

Monday! (Lord knows I needed that) I am going to stick it out a bit longer and

try to go with the increase in about a week and see what happens. I am praying

that this works because as I said in a previous email, I have no pain, which, as

you know, for us is a wonderful thing! I will kepp you posted.

Hugs.,

I have done this once before but got sick again when I resumed my

bad eating. So now finally I am eating healthy and all signs of this

horrible illness are gone. I plan on staying on this good eating

path for life now,...

Donna,

I went thru some fairly bad fibro, but pretty much licked it by

changing to non toxic products in the house, and for my personal care,

as well as some great vitamins - but have friends that this did not

work for (as well as some who did improve like I did). Now I'm

curious (for my friends who did not improve), what is the dietary

change that helped so much? Was it diet alone or diet AND meds? What

bad eating habits triggered it again?

New to the forum and looking forward to learning more! Thanks in advance,

Sharon
