It can be use as a warm up, as a piece of action/therapeutic exploration or as closure. It is extremely flexible. It can concretize anything or anybody. It brings the work immediately into the here and now.

The purpose of the Empty Chair is to:

Encourage Expression

Explore/clarify multiple parts of self or others

Facilitate Role Reversal

Concretize choices and options

Role Train

The Empty Chair can be use to represent a person, a relationship, a role, a part of the self, one's strengths or one's defenses, a metaphor or an entity such as a higher power or one's disease.

Participants will learn ways to use the Empty Chair in working with the various phases in the life of a group. Some of those ways include how to:

Integrate a new group members

Assist in group building

Warm group up to issues of common concern

Address specific issues both psychodramatically and sociodramatically

Address conflict in the group

Facilitate closure

In addition, participants will learn how to use this powerful tool in working with individuals through the use of:

Role reversal

Doubling

Concretization

Spatial constructs

Self doubling

Role training

Inner dialogue work

Surplus reality

Students at all levels of experience are welcomed.

ACCOMMODATIONS: Affordable overnight accommodations are available.

CEUs: 7 hours towards certification by the American Board of Examiners in Psychodrama, Sociometry & Group Psychotherapy; National Association for Drama Therapy; and the American Society of Experiential Therapy. This training also provides CEUs toward national credentialing by National Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors NAADAC). CEUs are accepted by NYS OASAS, National Board of Certified Counselors and contribute towards recertification requirements for the National Registry of Group Psychotherapists.

Working with couples in therapy lends itself to putting individual and shared problems into action. When clients come to us, they have often exhausted the words or behaviors that they have been using to try to communicate. Psychodrama offers creative ways to help people explore the issues they bring in and help them to design different ways to negotiate for what they want in the relationship.

In this workshop, participants will learn ways to help their clients:

understand the other's viewpoint

safely express feelings

explore individual and shared expectations of the role of partner

respond more effectively to their partners

identify the "ghosts" that pop up between people and get in the way of true communication

slow down their conflict so each can know he/she is heard and understood.

Some of the psychodramatic techniques that can be used in couples work are:

Doubling

Role reversal

Concretizing

Encounter

Empty chair

Role training

Role diagrams

The workshop will be both didactic and experiential, using role play to practice what you've learned.

I Don't Wanna... You Can't Make Me!Action Interventions with Adolescents, Substance Abusers and Other Reluctants ClientsThursday, May 27 (6:00PM-9:00PM), Friday, May 28 (9:00Am-5:00PM) and Saturday, May 29 (9:00AM-4:00PM)Baltimore, MDTrainer: Walters, MS, LMHC, LCAT, TEP

Psychodramatic interventions that 'go with the resistance', honor defenses and are attuned to sociometry create the safety that help change barriers into open doors. This encourages individual and group warm up to spontaneity, healing and change. This workshop is especially useful for those working with adolescents, the chemically dependent and 'acting out' clients.

Together we will explore what is resistance? How does it get in the way? How does it serve us? How can we help our clients move beyond it?

Participants will learn and practice:

Sociometric exercises that that increase group cohesion and safety

The use of the Empty Chair

Doubling in group and individual work

The power of role reversal

Sociodrama

Participants will be taught a series of experiential structures that assist in helping reluctant clients make choices towards change.

Students at all levels of experience are welcomed.

CEUs: Continuing education units provided by this training are accepted by National Association of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC) and are accepted by NYS OASAS, National Board of Certified Counselors and towards recertification requirements for the National Registry of Group Psychotherapist as well as 16 hours towards certification by the American Board of Examiners in Psychodrama and Group Psychotherapy, National Drama Therapy Association and the American Society for Experiential Therapy. Certificate of 16 land Social Work CEUs available at an additional cost of $30.

Certification and Continuing Education Units (CEUs)

The Continuing Education Units (CEUs) provided by most of these trainings are accepted toward national credentialing by the National Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC), the National Board of Certified Counselors, and towards re-certification by the National Registry of Group Psychotherapists. MFT, CSW and Drama Therapy CEUs are pending. Most HVPI workshops offer credit towards national certification by the American Board of Examiners in Psychodrama and Group Psychotherapy and can be counted toward Drama Therapy Registration.
