Guest guest
Welcome to the group ChrisTal. Could you tell us more about the aromatherapy? Did you just have these oils in a burner or were they used as massage oils. Did you put the epsom salts in the bath water when she had a bath? how much epsom salts & how often & for how long did you use the oils? Sorry about all the questions but this is something new to me. TherezaChrisTal wrote: Hi everyone my name is Chrissi I have a lil girl named Alyssa she is 5 and will be 6 July 2nd. She has CF and has been battleing many many infections. We were told almost 2 years ago that she has bronchectasis. I have reading through your posts and it looks like some interesting stuff. I plan on getting through all of them soon. I would like to say that something I havent ran across here is a discussion on TTO= tea tree oil. I learned about this stuff on a CF board and thank goodness I did. Alyssa cultured Pseudamonis for 2 years and we tried everything to fight it. we could get the levels down and I was told that we will not get rid of it. She also had MAC they found it in June last year. She started on the meds for TB. In August last year she cultured Pseudamonis, aspergillis, stenatrophamonis, MRSA, staphallocus areous (sp) and the mycobacterium avium complex. In september I started the aromatherapy with tea tree oil, and alternated between lavender and eucalyptus. Her september culture came back with only MRSA. MRSA is the only thing she has had for the past 8 months. I also started the baths with epsom salts at the same time. I believe those 2 things are responsible for killing those bugs. I am thrilled!!! Just wanted to share that and I wish everyone here all the best. I am so happy to have found this group too.Chrissi__________________________________________________
Guest guest
Hello Chrissi and welcome to our Bronchiectasis family, I'm sorry your little girl is having to go through this. I find it hard enough as an adult! I swear by T Tree oil, we always have several bottles of it in the house. It is one of the most powerful anti bacterial substances known to man and I use it for all sorts of things. I'm delighted to hear it has helped your daughter so much, may I ask how you used it for your daughter, did you massage it with a carrier oil or use it in a diffuser? I use Eucalyptus too, in my bath and on my pillow at night, it does help me breathe. There are many Aromatherapy oils which help our condition I am trialling 2 unusual ones at the moment -Ravensara and Eleclampane both of which are meant to help expel mucus from the lungs. You are so wise in looking at alternative remedies, many of us on this group use all sorts of different things. Do keep us posted of your daughters progress. Guest guest
Hi thereza, Please do not woory about the questions. I am more than happy to answer. Yes I do put them in a diffuser. I put 2 drops of tea tree oil and 1 to 2 drops of lavender(at night) in a diffuser in her room. Alot of people from the cf board boil water and add the drops and then cover their head with a towel. I will do this eventually but right now I am afraid she will somehow touch the pot or water. I would be happy to email you some article on the proven benefits of the oils. I was blown away . a lil skeptical at first but I am willing to try anything safe. and I am so happy I did. My husband suffers terribly each year from allergies and since I started using these oils he noticed a difference in his own sinuses. I also clean and disinfect with tea tree oil. It is honestly a lil cure all in a bottle. I swear by it! I put about 1/4 cup of epsom salt in her bath at least 3 times a week. Studies have shown that just that amount will bring MG levels up sometimes 80%. I know that she must be depleted because of the harsh antibiotics she is on. I also mist her bed linens twice a week with a typical battle containing 5 drops of tea tree oil and 2 cups of water. It kills dust mites and prevents them from returning. She has not had " crusty eyes " since I started that either. Let me know if you would like some of the research papers and recipes for ways to use it. Guest guest
Yes please Chrissie any research paper would be of great interest to me. I take Magnesium supplements as that is supposed to help with chronic asthma, I did not realise Epsom salts would have similar effect. I learn new things every day that's what I love about this group! June > Hi thereza, > Please do not woory about the questions. I am more than happy to > answer. Yes I do put them in a diffuser. Guest guest
Hi Chrissie and welcome to the group. I would love the website/recipes you use for your daughter. As well as bronch, I also suffer terribly from allergies as do my children. Anything natural I can do to make it better would be great. I'm really interested in how you spray your daughters bed. a Belling UNMC Department of Surgery 983280 Nebraska Medical Center Omaha, NE 68198-3280 (402)559-6784 (phone) (402)559-6749 (fax)
Guest guest
I remember my grandmother soaking her feet in epsom salt water and never knew why. Epsom salt is magnesium go figure. It is easily absorbed into the skin. Because of the dosing schedule around antibiotics I can give her supplements( MG reduces the affect of antibiotics) however if it is absorbed through the skin it does not affect antibiotics. The majority of the CF babies either do the baths or sweet magnesium which can be mixed with water or juice. Her are a few interesting links and I can also email you some files. http://www.radonseal.com/molds/tea-tree.htm (good information) http://www.teatreeoiluses.com/ (list of germs proven to kill) http://jac.oupjournals.org/cgi/content/full/45/5/639 (research*) http://www.meddent.uwa.edu.au./teatree/faq.htm these are good informative sites. I tink the main thing to remeber is that you need to make sure that you are buying 100% pure Melaleuca alternifolia oil(that is the real tree). dont but anything that isnt 100% it will not have the same properties. I hope this helps Chrissi > > > Hi everyone my name is Chrissi I have a lil girl named Alyssa she > > is > > > 5 and will be 6 July 2nd. She has CF and has been battleing many > > > many infections. Guest guest
Hi June, Thank you for the warm welcome. I am so glad that you also found the oils. That was 1 of the reasons for joining this group. I just feel so strongly about the benefits that I think everyone with any type of lung problems should give it a try. I mainly use it in a diffuser at night but I do occasionly talk her into letting me give her a massage with them. I use vitamin E oil as the carrier oil. And I do occasionaly add a drop of lavender and TTO to her bath. She is 5 so sometimes I have to pick my battles. She does like the lavender in her bath but she doesnt care much for the massage. I think she is just to busy. She already has 2 sit for several hours a day for therapy (drainage) so a massage is just time taken from her busy day lol. Sometimes when she is sleeping I gently massage her. I started looking at alternatives when reality slapped me in the face. Unfortunatly her doctors were treating so many things but nothing was getting better. During her last 2 week hospital stay in June I just got fed up and decided I had to do something. The docs dont really have much to say about what I am doing, but because they have had no choice but to acknowledge that there have been signifigant changes all they say is just keep up the good work. And odf course be careful. Thank you Chrissi > > > Hi everyone my name is Chrissi I have a lil girl named Alyssa she is > > 5 and will be 6 July 2nd. Guest guest
Thank you too for the warm welcome. I am happy to be here. When I change her sheets once a week I mist her mattress with a solution of 5 drops tea tree oil and 2 cups of water in a spray bottle ( make sure it has the mist nozzle) I shake it up each time I use it. I actually do all of the furniture and rugs. Every other day I also mist her pillow and sheets. I do it during the day while she is at school just to give it time to dry. Last week I started adding 2 drops of lavender to the bottle because she like the smell and it is a relaxing oil. It also melts mucus. I am trying to find my file on recipes. I only use homemade products now and I honestly feel like my house is cleaner and safer than it has ever been. I am going to find it today and I think I will post it in the files section. I will let you know as soon as I post it. Another benefit to natural homemade cleaning products is the amount of money I have saved while procting my family from harmful chemicals !BONUS! lol Chrissi > > > > > Hi Chrissie and welcome to the group. Guest guest
Hi Chrissi, how wonderful about the Tea Tree Oil. When I am choked up I use a mixture of Lavender, Tea Tree Oil and Eucalyptus in a burner. What method are you using? Massage, burner, or just in the bath? I don’t know any of the other things you’ve mentioned – in fact I don’t know what the letters stand for either. Welcome to the group; I know you’ll learn a lot here. Guest guest
Chrissi, I’ve been using essential oils since I was introduced to them over ten years ago when my daughter was unwell. I use them all the time and swear by them. I’ve done loads of courses and make my own massage oils, hand creams, moisturisers, and even soaps and powders. I don’t do it so much these days as I don’t have the time, but I still make my own talc, and will never go back to using store bought stuff. I buy the pure talc from Auroma - which is a company here in Australia who produce their own oils etc. - and add 20 drops of whatever oil I want to use, to approx one and a half cups of pure talc. You put the talc in a jar, add the oils, then seal the jar and shake. Every day you need to shake it at least twice a day (I do it every time I walk past the jar) then after ten days it’s ready to use. Since I’ve been using pure talc instead of the store-bought stuff, I haven’t had anywhere near the amount of asthma. And it’s bliss on the skin. Not raspy and rough like the store stuff. And it smells better too. You can also add a few drops of whatever oil you choose to a face washer. Then drop that on the base of the shower and enjoy the fragrance. Depending on what you use, it can help shape your day in regard to moods. If you shower at night, use some lavender for a good night’s sleep. This is one of the subjects I write about, and have been published in. I didn’t think to tell you guys – it’s all second nature to me. (But I didn’t know it would kill the pseudo!) Guest guest
Chrissi, has Alyssa had any problems with the lavender affecting her skin? If so, do you know you can add a few drops of milk to stop the acid in it burning her? It’s fine for adults as the raw product, but some children have this problem, which, as you can see, is easily overcome. Guest guest
Thank you Cheryl, I didnt know that but that is good to know if we ever do have a problem with it. If I ever use lavender it is so diluted that she is barely getting any. and as you already know Im sure it really doesnt take much. Maybe I will try the milk just for added safety. Guest guest
I actually use all 3 it just depends on the way she is feeling. Sometimes she needs a little more than other times but mostly I use the burner (diffuser). Im not sure which letters I used ..... sorry. The only one I can think of are TTO = Tea Tree Oil CF = Cystic Fibrosis MAC = Mycobacterium Avium Complex TB = Tuberculosis Thanks, Chrissi > Hi Chrissi, how wonderful about the Tea Tree Oil. > > > > When I am choked up I use a mixture of Lavender, Tea Tree Oil and Eucalyptus > in a burner. Guest guest
Hi Chrissi, Welcome to the group! I have had bronchiectasis since a 2 year old, after a bout of whooping cough, (now 50ish but don't tell anyone)! I have also cultured pseudomonas for many years and it has become very difficult to treat. I can understand what you have been through with Alyssa, when antibiotics are no longer effective. I also do drainage 2-3 times daily to keep the infection under control. I am so pleased to hear that the tea tree oil has helped Alyssa, together with the other oils. I must try the epsom salts as well! I have always been interested in aromatherapy and did a hobby course a few years ago. I must say I didn't realise the potential of TTO at the time. Cheryl, I enjoyed your aromatherapy tips as well! Patchouli oil is a favourite of mine, I remember we used to wear it as a perfume (it was considered trendy at the time), so the smell brings back some good memories (lol)! I look forward to catching up more. Guest guest
Eeeeuuuuuuw! Patchouli as perfume – can’t think of anything worse. I hate the smell! Glad I could be of help. Aromatherapy can work wonders. That’s why I got so involved in it. I always try to think natural as you probably realise, and that’s one of the reasons. Turned my life, and my daughter’s life around when she was incredibly sick years ago. It even helped stop her from having a nervous break down. At least I believe it did. Guest guest
thanks love bunny. Magnesium is so important especially when you are on antibiotics. Alyssa's has not had any inflamation since I started with this stuff. We got a call from her doc yesterday and good news. Her culture from last wednesday is only growing MRSA methacillin resistant staph areus (sp. I still cant believe that just 7 months ago she had 7 to 8 things come back on her culture. THIS STUFF WORKS! I wasnt able to read the posts yesterday. My 13 year old daughter hurt her finger playing softball I took her to the doc for x-rays and of course she now needs to see a hand surgeon because it is a funky break that will probably need surgery. Take care Chrissi > Eeeeuuuuuuw! Patchouli as perfume - can't think of anything worse. I hate > the smell! > > > > Glad I could be of help. Aromatherapy can work wonders. Guest guest
Hi Chrissi, Good news about Alyssa's culture, and let's hope you can now clear up the MRSA. Is Alyssa still on antibiotic therapy for that one? I believe it can be quite a stubborn bug to treat. Sorry to hear about your other daughter, hurting her finger. I hope it is not too serious and does not require surgery. I remember playing softball as a kid, and the poor fingers used to take a battering .. still we always went back for more!! Thanks for the tip about magnesium. Take care, Love, Bunny -----Original Message-----From: bronchiectasis [mailto:bronchiectasis ] On Behalf Of ChrisTalSent: Thursday, 12 May 2005 10:18 PMTo: bronchiectasis Subject: Re: New to group Mom with 5 year oldthanks love bunny. Guest guest
Hello Chrissie, I too use the same oils, I use tea tree oil or eucalyptus oil in floor wash, baths and basins etc. i use Lavender oils infused with several others , and use them to help promote sleep, but infused they are good in last rinse of laundry cycle, also hair rinse. i use lavender or orange, and or mandarine oils too. I have been telling several in the group how good they are for sinus etc too. I also use many types of other naturls too. Ie, capsicum, celery , gerlic. onion. I use chilli when sinus and ears are playing up. I let the chilli boil away, happily, keeping on checking not to boil dry, but let that permiate the house too, wonderful for head colds and sinuses. The oils are gentle, but some are not too good for asthmatics, as I am, so I use only a drop max 2 drops. As strong scents aggrevate the asthma. Garlic and ginger oils too are very good medicines too. You and I might be able to share some secrets LOL I use a few drops of vanilla, peach, eucalyptus, tea tree oils etc in some other cleaning things that I don,t like the smell of, but use, such as bleach. Bleach tends to take my breath away, but with a drop or 2 of lavender oils etc, have no probs. A drop of any oil on the insert of loo roll is great too, keeps bathroom smelling good, and isn,t offensive. Must go, welcome, Sandy
Guest guest
Chrissie, I use epsom salt foot baths for several probs, my feet break out when an acute attack or a flare up of my R/A. too/ Using all these products have many great properties, and I along with others have been reminding people in this great group, just how beneficial they are( the naturals) Tea tree honey is wonderful too. Sandy. Just have to remember a lot of asthmatics are sensative to the scenty type things , but can use the herbal and food remedies. Guest guest
Chrissie, you sound like another ME. My children all suffer these probs as do their children, and use all naturals too. Sandy
Guest guest
Cheryl my children and I all have very sensative skins, none of us can use soap etc on face, or let shampoos etc run down from shower, hair on to face either. We use oils all the time, and use them in yoghurt, as a cream for sores, after scabbing etc, as with fish oils too, they are great for assisting healing etc. We use yoghurt or as you do milk, but yoghurt is great as a face and leg etc balm. I also use it on my feet, then put a cotton sox on for an hour. after epsom salt foot bath. We also use eucalyptus oils in foot baths for colds, works wonders, have been telling the group this( sharing with) for ages, these things really work, as does the lemon, lime, and oil. Castor oil, with a drop of favourite oil too is great for skins that are sensitive, glycerine and oils are great to gargle with, and also clean mouth , tongue with. I write about these too, Great to hear you,re making good with your book, another 2 sales well done. Sandy
Guest guest
I,m sure it did, stop the breakdown Cherly, as I have 2 daughters that I,m sure were saved from same with the aroma and natural therapy, both now do massage and aroma therapy as their main jobs here. I,m equally sure its what saved my life, still is, and now have been told by the doctors of the gents I care for, that there is a remarkable change in both of them( I have been with them as a primary carer, for nearly 4 months now, and its the longest either have stayed out of hospital in over 10 years. Changed their diets totally too. So it does all work. One day those of us who do all this natural stuff, and share , should get it all together, backed by evidence from some in the group etc, and see if we can make a good understandable ref book. Guest guest
WOW--Cheryl--Thatr would be soo exciting --love going to the movies --have trouble these days getting through novels --2 pages and I'm gone for the night--have my fingers crossed for you---Del RE: Re: New to group Mom with 5 year old Sandy, I use lavender for all the little scrapes and stuff, as well as burns. In the laundry, bath etc. I could make my own shampoos etc., but honestly, I don’t have the time. I do buy a lot of raw materials from Auroma, and am lucky enough to get them direct from the manufacturer, so save heaps. I also used to make a spray for the face, a kind of refresher, but it’s soooo fiddly. Had to soak the oils in alcohol for so many days, then add the water, then let it all diffuse before use. Pah-lease, I just don’t have the time!!! Thanks for the good vibes about my book “Saving Emma” – which the publisher has on special at the moment – 15% off. I have another publisher interested in putting both my ebooks into print, but nothing concrete at present. He has told me he’s tentatively slotted in the print run for mid to late next year, so it sounds pretty good, but I won’t get excited, I just won’t! I especially won’t get excited about the big advance, or the terrific covers. (they would be part of a series of books for writers.) Oh, and I’m not really supposed to tell anyone this, but I know you guys won’t spread it around. Saving Emma is under consideration for adaptation into a movie!!! Again, nothing concrete, and its all early stages yet. I may not know anything for months. With both these, even if they don’t get accepted, I know I’ve worked long and hard to get this far. If I doesn’t happen, I will admit disappointment, but thrilled to get to this stage so early in my writing career. Guest guest
Oh Chrissy, what a blow for the daughter with the sore hand, I hope you can get her in quick, as that can be a problem if not seen to ASAP, although with a break, you have to wait 4-7 days I think. As for the magnesium, yes its a wonderful thing, and great to hear the youngest is doing better, although the staph she has is hard to knock out too, good luck with it, Sandy
