Guest guest
That was a fun one....I got the correct answer, so did my dad. My mom got the other answer....maybe men are just smarter hahaha.....just kidding. Jeff
Guest guest
If you haven't done this one yet, don't read any further because I am about to spoil the trick. http://www.send4fun.com/braintest.htm Bonnie, don't worry about being math challenged. There is a very logical reason why most people make a mistake on this test. Most people have mental short-cuts to help them with math. Since you are dealing with 1000 and multiples of 10 it is easier to break the math into two distinct parts - the first and third digits. 1000 + 40 = 1040. Your mind breaks the number into two pieces 10 and 40, 1040 Next you add 1000 and 30. You add 1 to the first digit and 3 to the third digit so it becomes 20 and 70, 2070. Again you add another 1000 and this time you ad 20. This brings you to 30 and 90, 3090. You add another 1000 bringing you to 40 and 90 or 4090. Now here's where the mind tricks you. You know that when you add the next 10 that the 9 goes back to zero and you carry the one over to the next place. 90 + 10 = 100. If you have 490 + 10 the 4 becomes a 5 and the result is 500. Since your mind is still breaking the number into two pieces, when you add the 10 your mind tricks you into carrying the 1 in the wrong position. Right Wrong 4090 40 90 + 10 + 10 ------- --------- 4100 50 00 See, the problem isn't you being math challenged. The question was designed to take advantage of the simple rules most people use to make math easier. I have a B.A. degree in accounting and it got me the first time. Then it pissed me off that I got it wrong so I looked at the question very carefully until I determined why I messed up. -Barb

Guest guest
I'm with Bonnie - there is nothing fun about math.
Guest guest
Well, this is depressing. I went back and did it mentally about 8 times and STILL came up with 5000. It wasn't until I read Barbs explanation that I knew where I went wrong. I consider myself to be a smart person...now I'm not so sure....! Love, Glenda millgate@... Good thing there are calculators because I can't add without them! But then, of course, I always make mistakes with them too! I think I finally figured out why I can't add numbers - I have a terrible time with keeping line maintenance with the eyes AND proprioception (knowing where my fingers are on the keys), thus making mistakes. See? I can too blame all of my faults on EDS! <BEG> (said with tongue firmly implanted in cheek! <G>) Bonnie - old fumble fingers herself on keyboards - maybe that's why I couldn't play the piano either? hehehehe

Guest guest
My mom had sent me this before. I tried it several times, then finally broke out the calculator. It was driving me crazy.
