Guest guest
We live in a culture of (mostly) presumed heterosexuality. How do these assumptions filter into the psychotherapeutic space? How do we as therapists navigate our own personal and political views and what role does activism play in our profession and lives? Do these two roles, psychotherapist and activist, compliment or complicate our professional identity? If our queer clients or we, feel like unequal second-class citizens what messages may we be sending or absorbing when we meet with our clients? And…to what extent do we consider discrimination or harassment based on sexual orientation as a stressor with implications for treatment and what is it's relationship to other form of oppression, prejudice and discrimination? Please join us for another lively and thought provoking gathering of the Queer Forum where LGBTQ therapists have a chance to share ideas, network and be part of a community. Students are welcome! Please feel free to invite non-CAT therapists. When: Monday, October 26, 2009 Time 6-9 pm Where: IAP 526 W 26th Street (btw 10-11th ave) Suite 309. Fee: Students: $15 / $20 professional. Please e-mail navahjs@... to RSVP by Oct. 15th. Facilitators: Mark Beauregard, RDT, LCAT, is a drama therapist currently working at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital in the Adolescent Partial Hospital Program. He serves on the Tri-State Chapter of NADT, and is currently the Conference Chair NADT's upcoming conference in November. Mark is also a new father, having recently adopted with his partner, and is experiencing a whole new intersection of when political meets personal. Navah Steiner, RDT, LCAT is the Associate Training Director at the Institute for the Arts in Psychotherapy and a Psychotherapist at the School of Visual Arts counseling center. She also maintains a supervision and private practice in NYC. Navah is the founder of the Queer Forum and is excited to collaborate with Mark for this month's topic.
