Guest guest
Just FYI.. VSL3 is NOT guaranteed to be Casein free. That said it was great for my son but for those who have issues with casein, this may not be a good option. It was brought to the autism world for help with oxalates so not sure how it will do for the general autism population who do not have these issues. It is also VERY strong.. many times stronger than anything else I generally see mentioned so it would need to be done low and slow for sure and if oxalates are not an issue and casein sensitivity is, you might find other proven probiotics to be a better option. The casein did not affect my son but he was recovered when we used it but still having some gut issues. I would NOT have used it during treatment with Dr. JM when we were very strict on diet. Guest guest
You could try Primal Defense probiotic. We just switched from Diflucan to Nystatin and now back to Diflucan - so I know it's hard. Shari Need probiotic ideas... Hello, We've just received results from my daughter's latest CDSA. Here are the numbers: (drum roll) Beneficial flora: Bifidobacter 1+ (the usual) E. coli spp. 3+ Lactobacillus spp. 2+ Enterococcus 2+ Imbalances: Klebsiella pneumonia 2+ Pseudomonas aeruginosa 2+ Staphylococcus aureus 1+ Dysbiotic flora: Citrobacter freundii 1+ Citrobacter baakii 3+ Mycology: Saccharomyces cerevisiae 1+ During the past year, I've been rotating dd through four probiotics: Klaire Detox, Klaire Therbiotic, Klaire Factor 4 and MindLinx (1 before breakfast and one before bed). I give her Xymogen Saccharomycin DF (1 in AM, 1 at bedtime) every day, too. During the two months previous to the test, because we were in the middle of a move, we were out of all probiotics but the Mindlinx,Factor 4 and Sacch B...don't know if that is reflected in these results. Based on this profile, can anyone suggest other probiotics to try? We've bombed out on probiogold in the past (violent reactions). We've started Diflucan and will follow with Nystatin once that is done. Our DAN! sent a prescription for Bactrim, but we have a family history of violent allergic reactions to sulfa drugs, so I'm reluctant to start that one. DD is not experiencing any diarrhea and rarely has gasiness, either. She's doing so well in terms of behavior/social, with lingering difficulties in maintaining focus on structured tasks. Thanks so very much for any ideas. I need to order more probiotics, but don't want to do the same ones if it's really time to switch, but have had such difficulties tolerating anything other than the Klaire ones in the past. Many thanks, Carla, mom to Aidan (9 years old and starting school in 2 weeks in a new state with with NO IEP! YAY!)

Guest guest
Perhaps you could take a look at Super Pro Bio from Kirkman. It has 75 billion organisms. I am using it for my ds right now and he seems to be tolerating it well. However if you have had problems with Pro Bio Gold in the past, you should compare them first. Also, we used MindLinx, as you have, and had good results as well. Good luck! Anne > > Hello, > > We've just received results from my daughter's latest CDSA. Guest guest
Hi Carla, Regarding the antibiotics. My DAN does not use Bactrim because there is a high incidence of becoming resistant to the drug (I actually am). She used vancomycin for my son. You may want to call the compounding pharmacy and speak with the pharmacist. Tell them what bacteria you want to " hit " ....sometimes they have a better idea. I would not use Bactrim if your family history shows an intolerance for it. In my book intolerance = allergy. Just my opinion. We try to rotate probiotics. Prior to my son being put on Diflucan, we had a difficult time putting him on probiotics and Sac B. Now that he has been on Diflucan (now Nizoral) he tolerates it better. We use VSL#3. Start small and build up. Another probioitic is Custom probiotics (google the company) they have a " line " for ASD children. Another idea.....Since your son is on Diflucan (and not a antibacterial agent) the bacteria may be growing due to the lack of competition for food (less yeast). You may want to add some UVa Ursi, caprylic acid or grapefruit seed extract....to tie you over, until you get a better antibiotic on board. Uva Ursi is a heavy hitter so use it only for ten days (my 4 year old gets 40 drops - 2 times a day) I always think that bacteria and yeast need a ONE - TWO punch backed up by the army of probiotics. Hope this helped....Good Luck > > > > Hello, > > > > We've just received results from my daughter's latest CDSA. Guest guest
Thank you all for the input. I realize that, as much as I fear making my posts too long, I need to give more history when I ask a question... Aidan is SUPER sensitive to casein, so although I've purchased VSL#3 and do pursue lower oxalates, etc, MY gut has been telling me to stay away... We have a family history (me) of impressively violent allergic reactions to any sulfa-based antibiotic, as well as olive leaf extract...we haven't tried Aidan on either one as a result. I will call the pharmacists at Wellness today and ask what might be a better alternative. Our DAN! had suggested we start the bactrim only if we saw digestive upset. At the time we did the CDSA we hadn't started the diflucan yet. This is my first time being willing to try it. DD is starting in school in two weeks and there is pressure to send " treats " to school with her, as well as pressure from her to have more rice/potatoes/apples in her diet than in the past. So, when the OAT numbers showed yeast overgrowth, rather than totally narrow her diet again (and risk depression and outright rebellion at this point), I agreed to try the antifungals. Is this a really unreasonable thing to do? Should I just go back to strict diet? It's become SO hard to find enough variety for her to eat and as she's taking more and more of a place in typical peer-group situations, I haven't wanted to make her feel even more isolated than the GFCFSF+ already does. At least she considers rice and apples a great treat... I guess what else I'd like to hear is whether you think I need to dump all the probiotics we've been using (given the numbers on the tests...although she's been functioning like a dream...), or whether just adding in a new one would do. How have others balanced the diet vs. meds issue? In the past, I'd pick narrow diet every time, but I'm dealing with a walking, talking kid who is trying very hard to become part of a social/learning community. So appreciating all the feedback and support!!!! With gratitude, Carla
