Re:sarah palin

Both she and her sister have a special needs child. If she wins we have an advocate in the highest place in the country.

Her advocacy might well help elevate Autism Speaks, and their ilk, to a

position of influence well beyond what mere money can buy.

That scares me.

That could be said of any of the politicians though.

Do we have any indication that she leans more in line with those groups?

The straw poll in this part of the UK about the revelations on the latest US presidential candidate reveals a huge level of cynicism - times to bring out a woman, bring out her wee child - the politics are and still will, be the same, though? Judy B, weary of the politicing (remembering Bush sitting with a lady in a wheelchair and promising stem cell research for her.....)WD Loughman wrote: eyescraperaol wrote:> Both she and her sister have a special needs child. I've no 'direct evidence'. My older son is a long-time homeowner in

Wasilla, where Palin was Mayor. He was something of a supporter once,

but now doesn't trust her much. Thinks she's a bit of an opportunist.

From his comments, together with McCain's comment about autism from

the convention podium (and other things), I surmise what I said.

IF it comes about, it *does* scare me. Autism Speaks' point of view

isn't one I'd like to see take hold as a matter of Federal policy.

I just finished reading McCains speech.. I didn't notice anything in there about curing autism.. just alluded to a family that had a child with autism in the middle of a bunch of "families-he's-met-with-American-problems" that all politicians feel obligated to inset into every speech to prove they understand bla bla bla.

I would say that I don't think there is a way for either party to avoid being influenced by Cure Autism Now or Autism Speaks or any of the other organizations like that. They have the money and the lobbyists and hold and promote the default view of our entire culture. Every PSA, every movie, every television show that has an Autistic character, every PBS documentary..

I think the advantage of having someone like Palin as a high up representative of special needs families is more general. If she had a specifically autistic child, that's one thing. But her child is downs syndrome. I would expect any influence she uses in regard to special needs children will be for special needs families in general and downs syndrome families specifically. If she does choose to focus on autism, then we stand as good a chance with her as we do with any candidate. The Democratic candidates certainly don't lean toward neurodiversity, and the concept of a nationalized healthcare system would remove any opportunity for non-medical treatment since the government's default opinion is that autism needs to be cured.

Bill,

Sorry for the format of this: my computer seems to have a new glitch that it gets stuck, and keeps doing certain commands over and over, like spacing. I am not too sure why yet. In any case, if we could get there first, and explain to her what is needed, then maybe she would not take that stance. She seemed to be trying for the votes of the disabled community. If we could explain that there are adults on the autism spectrum who are considering voting for her, but that we are people in our own right, and not just "normal" people who were "cured" as children, then it could change the way she views things. I think that we should write to her, but I am not sure how at this point. She is interested in doing the right thing, and one way to present this would be in tterms of dollars: it is cheaper to meet our sensory needs, for example, than to have us out of work. It is cheaper to actually fund adult

programs than to have us as less productive members of society. Of course, it would be great if there are more ideas here than I have. Where should I write?

Hi everyone,

I think this version is more readable: please forgive the last one!> Both she and her sister have a special needs child. I don't know much about her other than my brother and sister in law have lived in AK for many years and my sister in law thinks Gov. Palin is the best thing that happened to AK. They have a son with Asperger's and are in the public school system. I will ask my sister in law if Gov. Palin has done anything good or bad in terms of autism in particular or if her support is just a 'in general' sort of thing.

As far as lobbyists go.... there's no law against a bunch of AS folk being lobbyists.

Great ideas ! I would imagine we could write to main head quarters of that campaign. For that matter we could write to the main headquarters of BOTH campaigns. Because either way we need folks on both sides to know we don't want to be cured, aborted, or gene manipulated out of existence. She/He probably would not be able to read all their own mail but their people would read them and pass on the ones they felt most important. If we were able to use our writing skills to write a real, quality, grab your heart and mind letter they will pass it on. Also maybe it would be good if we had a list of GOOD web sites we could refer them too? I thought of Bill's work in progress... what other sites? Isn't there a site with Sondra's work on it, I always find her inspiring... Anyone, ideas?

I'm confused - why focus on just one politician (sarah palin) - why not write to all the candidates and compare their responses?
