Guest guest
I am coming into this late, but obviously the morale of the story here is don't code anything under autism or autism spectrum disorders. Insurance companies do NOT cover any treatment for autism as (yes, I know you've heard this song before) 'autism is a life long brain disorder for which there is no cure.' You need to get everything you do for your boys coded under what mainstream medicine considers the 'co-morbid conditions' to autism (which we all know are anything BUT co-morbid) I would suggest you contact the Thoughtful House and see if they are willing to code your boys' treatments under more appropriate ICD-9 codes, such as heavy metal toxicity, diarrhea/constipation of unknown origin, disorder of metabolism, multiple food allergies, candidiasis, gut dysbiosis, etc etc etc. Anything outside of biomed, such as auditory integration, OT, PT, Cranio Sacral Therapy needs to be coded carefully as well.. While fighting with the insurance company is a very worthy fight to fight, problem is that you are going to have a really hard time finding any placebo controlled, double blind, peer reviewed, multi center studies that support safety and efficacy of treatments used for our kiddos, so you are entering into a fight without ammo. Your energy and time is probably much better spent on getting your kiddos well.. Best of luck, Petra
