Hi eveyone,

There has been a lot of serious discussion back and forth lately which is all

fine, but i thought lets lighten things up a bit and share some brags and

achievements of our kids. I think we need to do this more! Let's celebrate the

recent achievements and milestones of our amazing children!

I'll start. Kira just turned six months (how did that happen so fast?) she

started army crawling 3 weeks ago. This week she has started getting up on all

fours. She also said " dada " to my husband 3 times last week beautiful

moments. She went under water in swimming class this week and loved it!

Good job mom! Great job Kira! Zedekiah is doing wonderful! He is pulling up and

standing alone. He won't take that 1st step. He is verbalizing wonderfully. Mama

and dada...mostly dada...lol!

It warms my heart everyday and I get so excited to see what he will do next.

The time does indeed go fast!  It seems only yesterday that Mahrya was hitting

all those baby milestone and now she is a beautiful young woman.  Mahrya is 14

and recently was named Greater Milwaukee Area Female Athlete of the year for her

region in the Special Olympics group.  Next September there will be an awards

banquet a few hours from our home that we will make a weekend out of.  She will

be featured in our local newspaper soon as well for this achievement.

well in school and 3rd grade was really a great year.  He is reading and doing

math.  He loves music and plays the piano by ear.  Finally, he is starting to

Wow Donna! Thanks so much for that post! Its encouraging to hear that Adam is

doing so well. I have been tremendously worried about Kaylee's issues with

speech but if I am understanding your email correctly it seems that Adam has

made wonderful progress even while working on his speech. Is that correct?

as a parent dont ever think you are doing the wrong thing, you know your child

best. My samuel just turned 6 and he also will be doing another year of pre

kingdarden in the fall. It took lots of convencing to the school to keep him

back one more year

Yes, that is true. He has a hard time with speech. For example, he doesn't

really carry on a conversation, but he will tell us some things that happened

during his day. We do have to prompt him to talk, which we do a lot. I am sure

you do this with Kaylee too. I notice that Adam does ne

think it is just because he is so used to getting by without talking.  I also

find it interesting that he can sing entire songs and read from books without

hesitation.  This year, he has made great progress.  Up until now, he has had

a teacher that babied him a lot.  Now his teacher challenges him and it has

made a big difference.  He has homework, does spelling test.  Granted, he is

not on a third grade level - more like 1st/2nd grade, but he is learning.  How

old is Kaylee now?  If I remember, she was younger than Adam, right?

Wow Donna - I remember when you first came to this group and Adam was a

baby!! You were one of the first Grandmas.

So glad to hear Adam is doing well. is not a chatter box either but

she does talk and some of her friends don't stop talking so they don't

notice.

Yes, she is 5. We have asked that she be allowed to stay in preschool for one

more year. I was hesitant to put her in a classroom of 20 to 25 children when

she would not be able to talk to me at the end of the day to let me know if

something was bothering her. I also wanted to make sure that she could

communicate her needs to her teacher. I am hoping that having one more year of

speech under her belt will better equip her to handle a larger class setting.

I'm just scared, I hope I'm doing the right thing.

Sounds like everyone is doing great! Congrats to Mahrya - that is an amazing

achievement! I bet Zedekiah will be walking before you know it and then you'll

be wanting him to slow down! I kind of feel that about Kira...you can't put her

down and walk away expecting to find her in the same place anymore!

Actually, we tried to keep Adam in preschool for an extra year too, because he

had just turned 5 in July.  Our school system would not let us keep him back. 

Then his preschool teacher explained that the kids who go onto Kindergarten seem

to mature more than the kids who are held back.  She said if you hold them

back, they will stay back.  We were scared too, but it turned out to be a good

thing for Adam.  Adam is in a smaller class setting though.  He has 10 kids in

his class and goes to general ed for part of the day.  Not trying to change

your mind.  Every situation is different.   Just something to think about.

I had also asked to leave back in preschool and the district didn't

let me. I wish I had fought harder. We ended up having her repeat 5th grade.

Do she could mature a little more before middle school. It turned out alright

now she is in 10th grade. But the kids she had known were then a grade ahead of

her. Thankfully she didn't mind staying back a year.

My decision to keep him back another year is his speach is that of about a 3

yearold, he is not even writing his name and just got hearing aids so my

feelings to keep him back was there was no way he can even try to keep up with

his age group

Since this conversation is going I thought I would ask opinions to help me with

my current decision.

My son is will be turning 5 in June. This year I held him back in preschool and

had him repeat the preschool 3 year old program. Next year we had planned for

him to attend the preschool in the 4 year old program.

He was tested by the school district to see where he would place for next year.

The district is recommending placement in their transitional kindergarten

program. Which is a classroom in our school district of approx 5 children with a

teacher an aide. They design an IEP for each child and the therapists come into

the classroom as well as an additional speech lesson. They focus on kindergarten

readiness. It is a half day program and this is the first year they have offered

this.

The downside is this would be at a different elementary school then his older

brother attends.

My question is; if this was offered to you would you elect to send your child

here or fight for inclusion in the classroom for kindergarten the following

year? I am afraid that if I agree to send him to the transitional class and

release him to the school district he will be set up to be seperated from here

on. Is this better for him or is it better to be included in the typical

classroom? Should I give him the extra year to mature at his preschool with his

current therapists from the IU and then retest next year for kindergarten? Next

year they can recommend placement in a special Ed kindergarten class.

I am really grappling with this decision, and could use any insight or advice

anyone has to offer!?

Hi ,

My heart is with you right now because I know how you feel. For some reason this

particular decision to me seems to carry so much weight. I don't know, it kind

of feels like what we've decided to do for this one school year will effect the

rest of her education from here on out. I know it's not that drastic but in the

moment it sure feels that way

Did you visit the class to see what it is like - will your son fit in

there? He will be in the same school next year so one year at a different

school when all the kids are new and have to make friends will not be

traumatizing to him - if he were older and they were removing him from all

of his friends I would not agree - but he would be new in either school.

And then he would be new in first grade and (at least here anyway) many kids

go to a private kindergarten and are new in first grade too.

I agree.  Our kids are all very individual with different needs.  You have to

go with what you think your child needs.

Yes, that is true. He has a hard time with speech. For example, he doesn't

really carry on a conversation, but he will tell us some things that happened

during his day. We do have to prompt him to talk, which we do a lot. I am sure

My daughter was in the early intervention program at out local school since she

turned 3. When she turned 5, her teacher didn't think she was quite ready for

all day kindergarten. So she actually went to her kindergarten class in the

mornings and then went back to her pre-k class for the afternoon. After

christmas break p, she worked up to two full days of kindergarten. The next

year she went to full-time kindergarten. It was a really nice transition!! She

was very comfortable going into kindergarten because she knew the teacher and

what to expect. This was a great option! From her first year in kindergarten

to her second, she has totally done a complete turn around for the better.

Since she was repeating kindergarten, her teacher used her as her helper for the

newcomers. She thought she was really hot stuff!

Woohoo Zedekiah, Kira, and all the other little ones for accomplishing all of

these wonderful things and leaving your Mom's (and Dad's) to brag and

celebrate!!!

Olivia turned one in March (almost 14 mos) and up until then was scooting around

on her bum. One week after her 1st birthday she started properly crawling!

There's no stopping her now as she is crawling all over the house She is also

pulling herself up to a stand and getting very brave letting go and standing on

her own! She's already taken a step or two and the look on her face is priceless

- she's so proud of herself and gets so excited at the prospect of walking. I

can't explain the feeling I get watching her learn something new.

She vocalizes a lot, and has said " mama " a few times. She's always saying " da

da " - lol. She knows the sign for " more " and " all done " which makes feeding time

fun ...

.... but the biggest brag is that on Mother's Day she held a rice cracker and put

it in her mouth!! This is huge because up until this point she was not self

feeding. She's never had problems holding toys or putting them in her mouth and

she's always had her fingers in her mouth, but never would put food in her

mouth, even resisted it if you tried to show her hand over hand. With a lot of

patience, modeling and repetition she is now getting it and we couldn't be more

proud. We still have a ways to go overall, but this is BIG!!
