He said that my only other option is to remove the tooth. I know that I have read this is not a good idea but he was so convincing that it is ok. I am so upset and scared. Do I need to be? Many good dentists now are totally amalgam-free and only use composites - they don't pull out teeth or send those with cavities elsewhere; they fill them with something that doesn't have mercury. I consider any dentist who would put mercury in an autistic child's mouth a criminal - not much you can do now after its done except to take her to a decent dentist to have it removed who knows these kids cannot excrete the stuff nor can they have any chelation with amalgam fillings in place. No way would I use a dentist that does not do what I say as far as fillings are concerned. Much more of the tooth is destroyed using amalgams than with composites. Go and get that filling removed asap. Like Dr. McCandless says, she cannot excrete the mercury and you cannot chelate her with that filling still in. Just summer before last we spent $5,000 just to have fillings removed from our now 14 year old son's teeth. He is not ASD, but ADD and after learning what we know, I could not stand the idea of him having that in his mouth. Now we are chelating him. He did not suffer from learning problems until he was around 5. Before that he was so smart, the preschool teachers just bragged on him. But by age 5 he had boosters and his first three fillings because he had terrible enamle (they said due to antibiotics I took while pregnant). Did all that HG in the shots and the fillings cause his ADD? Absolutely it did. Don't wait and put this off. I feel horrible because I didn't know they used any mercury in fillings anymore. I feel like I should have asked a lot more questions but we have discussed her diagnosis several times and I just didn't think he would do that without telling me. But I really blame myself. I have to be more vigilant. I have the name of a dentist who can remove it and will do that asap. I have checked with my local group and have found someone who will take it out the safest way possible. Thanks for your quick responses. I feel a little better. Early in my career I had two cases where kids who had finally gotten speech lost it all right after they got amalgam fillings, and I started making it clear to anyone with whom I work that all fillings need to be removed ASAP and NONE EVER PUT INTO ASD KIDS (ACTUALLY IN ANY KIDS OR ANYONE FOR THAT MATTER). MANY ENLIGHTENED COUNTRIES HAVE MADE AMALGAMS ILLEGAL FOR CHILDREN, PREGNANT WOMEN, OR WOMEN OF CHILDBEARING AGE. BUT WE ARE WAY BEHIND IN THIS COUNTRY IN THIS AS IN MANY HEALTH ISSUES. DR. Here is their link: http://www.iaomt.org/ The IAOMT is an organization for dentists, physicians, and researchers that gives its members a better understanding of periodontal disease and the toxicology of mercury, fluoride and other dental materials. Dental schools do not teach students about the emission of mercury from amalgam. However, this organization does, and the scientific community has demonstrated that the placement and removal of mercury fillings should raise grave concerns. Dentists that belong to this organization are instructed on the safe methods of removing amalgam fillings. There is also a video called Smoking Teeth = Poison Gas that shows mercury vapor in black light outgassing from an amalgam dental filling. It's a pretty amazing video. I just thought it would be helpful for you to have this information, so you can read up about the safe removal of those amalgams from your child. Please don't be so hard on yourself. I know that sometimes these doctors can be intimidating. You are not the first mom that I have heard this story from. I hope this information is helpful in giving you the knowledge and the proper resources to help your child.
