Hazel, my local orthopedist here originally recommended Dr. Murrey in Charlotte for revision. However, I do not know anything about him other than he has done revision surgeries.

I do know that Dr. Hey has experience with complex cases that others won't touch.

Hi! I am a new member and have been requesting info for surgeons in the south. My name is Hazel and I'm considering revision surgery for flatback syndrome. I don't have a harrington rod but have had flatback since fusion surgery. I have scoliosis but never to such a degree that it required surgery. In 2003 I had so many problems with stenosis and pain that I had a laminectomy and fusion of L3 - S1. Everything went along great for about a year and then more pain. After X-rays and MRI my phsycian did another laminectomy and fusion from L3 to T12. I literally woke up with flatback but had complications and had to have my GB removed 16 days after the surgery. Then foud out that the pins were no longer intact and underwent another surgery for a nuts & bolts repair. During that procedure it was discovered that I now had osteomylitis of the spine. Needless to say I went home with IV antibiotic thaerapy for 6 more weeks. I kept telling my physician that I couldn't stand upright for more thatn a minute but he ignored this, stating that it would resolve. I finally found out about flatback on the internet and then my physician stated that patient's usually compensated for this by extending their hips. This was not the case for me. He had only performed 2 revisions surgeries and didn't recommend it, stating that the physicians who wrote articles had never done more thatn 10-15 cases. I saw another physician who did not recommend it, stating that manupilation of the spine caused parelysis. He had never performed the surgery himself. Needless to say, I was getting very depressed by this time. I couldn't walk more that 25-30 feet before fatiquing and couldn't stand without leaning on something. My life had changed drastically and I could not find anyone in SC that did revision surgery. I e-mailed Dr. LaGrone in Amarillo Texas and sent him my x-rays. He wrote me and stated that I did need revision surgery. I started looking for surgeons in the south and finally found Dr. at Duke Medical Center in NC, (I'm from SC). Then I found your group and Peggy has used Dr. Hey at Hey Clinic in Raleigh, NC. I am presently scheduled for surgery at Duke on 10/02 but I would like to have a surgeon with the most experience in this area. Dr. stated that he does 10-12 cases a year. I know that a group of physicians in Charlotte, NC perform revuision surgery but I don't know their names. I am going to call Dr. Hey tomorrow for an appointment. One of your members suggested that I tell the group about myself and I seem to have written a book. Didn't mean to be so long-winded. Thanks for all your info and please let me know if you have any more information. Thanks. Hope you had a good 4th!

To Peggy, Edie, and Everyone,

Thanks for your welcome and information. I am seeing Dr. Hey in August. Has anyone in the group seen Dr. at Duke, or do you have any information? I'll decide about seeing the Charlotte Dr's after seeing Dr. Hey.

After two years of flatback (which happened on the OR table) during my last fusion, my knees have suffered the most. I now need bi-lateral knee replacments. I am putting this off as long as possible. I have had cortisone injections and have just finished 5 Haylagon injections. They do seem to have helped. Have any of you had this problem from the abnormal anterior pelvic tilt which causes an abnormal angle of the knees?

Hi Hazel,Welcome to the group! Sounds like you are having a pretty rough time. Sorry, we all know how that feels, believe me. I just wanted to encourage you, in re: Dr. , to talk to some of his former patients that had surgery similar to what they are proposing for you. As far as Dr. Hey goes, you have both Peggy and Gross on this board who can fill you in on their experience with him. There is no harm in checking out the team in Charlotte, NC either. The more opinions/approaches you have, the better for an empowered final decision on your part. With the team in NC, as with Dr. , though, please ask to speak with former patients, find out how many of these types of surgeries they have performed, what approach they propose to take, etc. You can certainly run by the names of the doctors here, and folks will let you know if they have heard of them. No one here will tell you what

doctor to go to, but they will let you know if they've had any experiences with the docs you are seeing. And just because a doctor is not one of the best know names in the field does not make him/her unable or second-rate. My doctor, Dr. Bendo, was unheard of by this group, but well-known here in NYC, so I was confident in my choice to go with him. The field of doctors performing this surgery is growing, as the need for it is becoming more and more apparent.Good luck, and let us know how it all goes!Best,Edie>> Hi! Betty, I meant to post earlier. I had surgery by Dr. Hey about 2 weeks after Peggy did. I think he's the best.

Regarding the surgeon in Charlotte....I live near Charlotte. Though I have never had an appointment with Dr. Murrey, he is highly regarded as an orthopedic surgeon. Personally, I am glad I had Dr. Hey do my surgery. At one time I had typed out a long response as to why I didn't peruse Dr. Murrey, but it got so lengthy I just deleted it. If you want to hear my comments as to why I chose Dr. Hey I will be glad to elaborate, and I want to make sure you understand that it has nothing to do with Dr. Murrey personally - just my questioning the level of skill and experience that group of doctors in Charlotte have compared to others.

If you want, we can correspond via private email, or I'll be happy to go into detail here. I would be very interested in what Dr. Murrey's diagnosis and recommendation would be and compare that to Dr. Hey's.

I just feel that the doctors in Charlotte don't see that many people in our "condition" - or perhaps more importantly, they don't "see" or recognize the condition - as in a wrong diagnosis and very wrong treatment.

I was getting surgical treatment by the neurosurgeons, totally a different group of doctors in charlotte, but they just didn't get it as far as what was going on with my back. They just didn't see any connection with the previous HR surgery and scoliosis.

One of the Doctors in the group that Dr. Murrey is with, I did see - and he flat out told me that I didn't have flatback, that the problems I was having had absolutely nothing to do with scoliosis, previous scoliosis surgery, and what I needed to do was do increments of toe touches every morning to "fire those muscles up" and, well, that was all I needed to do. I know this sounds nutty but it is true. Then, here's the weird part. He was working at the Clinic when I had my appt. with him - the Clinic was "THE" place in this region back in the 60's - 90's for scoliosis treatment - from physical therapy to bracing to surgery with HR placement - and the two doctors who did the surgery were very well respected for their expertise. This particular younger doctor now in the same practice with dr. Murrey was with the clinic when I saw him and he had come to this area to work particularly to work with Dr. Hineg, one of the pioneer scoliosis surgeons with the Clinic I just spoke of.

Allright, there I went, going into the detail that I wasn't going to do - but though it isn't direct pertinent information, I feel that any information someone might have, especially when it involves possible back surgery, is worthy of putting down in writing...

So, that is pretty much that story. Sorry to have gone on so much, then not finishing...but I will.

, Thanks for your input. I've seen two physicians in ton, had my x-rays evaluated by Dr. LaGrone in Texas, and have also seen Dr. in Duke. Dr. LaGrone and Dr. e both agreed that I need revision suregery, but the two physicians in ton did not encourage it. One stated that he had only done the surgery twice, and the other one stated that I would have to have pain management but did not recommend the surgery, stating that it maninupilated the spine and resulted in paralysis. Dr. LaGrone is such a long way from my home in SC that I was hoping to find an experienced surgeon closer to home. I have an appointment with Dr. Hey August the 10th. I would not have known about him without the info from you and Peggy. Thank you so much. I would be interested in any correspondance with you guys, private e-mail or here, I

don't have a preference. Don't know if the others in this group would want to wade thru all this but they could skim and delete if not. I appreciate everyone's interest and encouragement from this site. I have been searching on the internet for two years and this is the first concrete information I've received. Thanks again!

The field of doctors performing this surgery is growing, as the need for it is becoming more and more apparent.Good luck, and let us know how it all goes!Best,Edie>> Hi! Great! I'll be the one with short white hair, tilting over forward. My husband will be with me, tall, salt & pepper hair, mustache.

I have long dark brown hair and my daughter will be with me. She is younger version of me (complete with her own rods) so we'll look like twins.
