Hansen and Lilley, neighbors of the shuttered Kiddie Kollege building here, have been tested for mercury poisoning in an attempt to explain some of their long-standing ailments. This time, Gene Elwell of American Medical Saliva Testing, Inc., (AMSTI) tested them in their homes. Advertisement Hansen and Lilley say they have suffered from various illnesses and annoyances including weight loss, peeling hands and feet, nerve damage and diabetes. Since July 28, when the Station Avenue building was closed for mercury contamination, both have wondered whether the heavy metal is to blame. A September blood test showed no signs of mercury in Hansen's body. Lilley, on the other hand, has tested positive for both mercury and lead. So have members of his family. " I'm just hoping that someone can tell me something, " Lilley said, two days after blood plasma in his mouth was tested. " We can't afford to move out of this house. Just working out of the house for a few weeks, I felt a lot better. I don't know which way to go. " In an effort to produce answers for nearby residents and former employees of the Accutherm thermometer company that previously occupied the site as well as more than 60 Kiddie Kollege students and staff members who may have been affected Elwell is coordinating a research task force. The Scientific Research Foundation for the Study of Heavy Metals-Poisoned Children was formed by several doctors in response to the Kiddie Kollege catastrophe, Elwell said. The foundation is looking for corporate sponsors to assist with equipment purchases and setting up the network of doctors, Elwell said. " Those already on the force are putting the mission statement together, " said Elwell, who is also president of American Medical. " But they're looking to recruit from many different facets of the medical industry. They have years of experience with this. We need to tap into that brain trust. " Hansen and the Lilleys were administered both oral fluid and urine porphyrin tests last week. Results are expected sometime this week. " This is all for the task force to get the study under way, " said Elwell. " I also want to get (Accutherm employees and their family members) into our database, " he added. " If your father, mother, uncle or whoever were former employees or family members of an employee of Accutherm, we want to test you, " Elwell said. According to Elwell, the foundation's lab is equipped " to do every modality of testing known to man today. " He wants to bring that level of testing to New Jersey. " If we get sponsors, we'll bring it here. We need that funding to do this, " Elwell said. The corporate Web site for American Medical Saliva Testing states that the federal Centers for Disease Control is currently evaluating the company's saliva-testing procedure as an " inexpensive and pain-free alternative " to traditional blood tests. The site also says that the laboratory is affiliated with the Biosciences Institute at Arkansas State University and certified by the Environmental Protection Agency.
