Guest guest
Hi all -- I jsut got a phone call from the preschool that Nina was SUPPOSED to be starting next Monday -- now it seems they might not let her actually attend the school!!! They said it was because the nurse and the teacher had " some concerns for her safety " while in school. Well, I'm sorry, but I think that *I* am the best judge of whether it's " safe " for Nina to go to school!! They said that now it's up to the school district supervisor as to whether Nina goes the full time, part of the time (with home schooling making up the difference) or fully home-schooled! Well, the whole POINT of Nina GOING to school is to experience DIFFERENT things, not be in " solitary confinement " by being kept at home for " school. " Since this is PREschool the other point is SOCIALIZATION. Nina will get NOWHERE if she isn't around other kids her age -- she needs to socialize. I have seen when she IS around other kids and she does very well! The other thing is my mental well-being (and financial!) -- I have been with Nina pretty much 24/7 for 3 years (only recently getting respite, and not a whole lot of that!), I was looking forward to getting a job (part time) while she is in school. It will be nice to be able to meet people that have nothing to do with Nina's problems. I was supposed to go to Nina's IEP (Individual Education Plan) meeting tomorrow, but got a call about 6 pm tonight changing it to Monday when the la-di-da supervisor can make it! They suggested that I bring Nina's home health nurse (who visits 2X/week for about 1/2 hour) and the friend (who is a nurse) with me (the friend-nurse was with me when we toured the school). What really gets me is that they have had Nina's registration packet for 2 weeks -- why do they wait until the night before (15 hours before to be exact) the meeting to tell me this?? And WHY cna't this supervisor clear a little time to maybe pop in or phone conference for the scheduled meeting?? Anyway, I am so totally BUMMED because I had been so jazzed about Nina going to school (the day she was to start, the teacher was going to throw a b-day party for her and then next Wed they are going to the zoo). I am going to fight tooth and nail to get her going like all the other kids -- there is NO reason why she shouldn't go. They are " nervous " or " scared " about her being there -- well, they have dealt with disabled children for YEARS (probably DECADES) and should have lots of experience at it -- I had it thrust upon me 3 years ago and have had NO formal training in the field! Well, thanx for letting me vent -- since my hubby got tired of me slamming doors. TTYL Kris Nina's mom
