Guest guest
Thanks ! ....But if it, is there, can it be fixed? I also take it....that it doesn't show up til about 3? Right?? - Subject: Re: DS Clinics To: MosaicDS Date: Thursday, August 20, 2009, 12:34 PM , The xray will be for the AAI which stands for Atlantoaxial Instability. Some children with Down syndrome (about 10-20%) will have atlantoaxial instability (AAI), a condition with loose ligaments between the first and second cervical vertebrae in the neck that can often be seen on x-ray. AAI puts them at risk of spinal cord injuries if this joint becomes dislocated, and neurologic symptoms from AAI will occur in about 1% of children with Down syndrome. X-ray screening of children with Down syndrome to detect AAI is required before participation in certain contact sports in the Special Olympics. You also need it before she can participate in hippo therapy or gymnastics. Re: DS Clinics I have taken Adde twice, since she has been born, she is 2 now.For one they follow the heath guidelines very closely. They check her thyroid, eyes, ears. I think she will have an X-ray taken at 3.( Not for sure why.) They look at her progress, and where is needs to be, not just with the typical kids, but with the other kids that have DS as well. Honestly I think that they compare her between the two. ...Which I kinda like, cause it's gives me an idea of how well she is coming along with her therapies. I will say that she is a little ahead in OT,and PT, but I think that she's behind in speech. Kids with typical DS seem to be doing more signs, and even have more sounds, and words then her. Also our DS clinic looks over IEPs. Adde will start Preschool in January, and the clinic has already called to make sure that I bring in her last progress notes from all of her therapies to our next appt in Sept. They offer to have someone that knows the ins, and outs of IEP to come to our IEP meetings. We don't have to have them, but their there if we need them. They always tell us never to sign the IEP right there in the office. Take it home, and look it over, and then fax a copy to them. If they see anything that needs to be change, the clinic will call me to let me know. I guess all in all..... I think you should at least go to your local DS clinic, just to see what they have to offer. mom to Adde
