My daughter Zephany will be 4 on Sunday and have had no interest in potty

training. Then over last weekend, she kept saying she had to potty and would go

to the bathroom, take off her diaper, get on the potty and say all done, without

going. Yesterday she actually went potty in the toliet !! Woohoo she's

finally getting it but I'm not pushing her. Letting her do it all herself with

mommy praising her alot ! I'm praying that once she gets it, maybe her older

sister will get the hang of it too!

Good luck

potty training help again

Hi All,

Well I am trying this potty training once again. Isabella is now 3 1/2 and

still not trained. I am baffled and do not know what to do. I have tried a

star system and gave a prize when she got 10 stars. I have tried candy after

she goes. I have bought her a doll that goes and even has a toilet. I swear

she does the opposite of everything I want her to do. Any suggestions.

I did find that doing an elaborate potty dance helped - making mommy as

silly as possible.

We took Ricky every 15 minutes no matter what. We literally set a timer. We

didn't make a big deal about it and we didn't force him to sit on the potty for

long. We gave positive reinforcement when he went and we just said, " Maybe next

time " when he didn't go. He learned relatively quickly and has done very well.

Of course, we will never know if the success was due to the process we used or

if Ricky was just " ready " .

I believe I have read about the same method from another family in this forum as

well. Best of luck to you and Isabella!

Wow, Sue, your post sure does bring back memories! Molly nearly drove me CRAZY

during the potty training process! It simply boiled down to her needing to be

ready. Honestly, I personally don't think 3 1/2 is terribly late, but I know

some moms will differ with me on that. I think the developmental expectation is

that a typical child should be trained by his/her 4th birthday, and I've even

read a LOT of material that says you shouldn't even start trying until the child

is almost 3. However, I know some parents really want to push it early -- I

guess so they can brag about how young their child was when they were potty

trained???? (If you really pin those parents down, though, you will hear them

tell about how their child regressed after being potty trained that early. They

always have some excuse, but I won't believe anything except the fact that the

child simply was not ready to be trained before their 2nd birthday; hence, the

regression). Notice, though, that I said that a typical child is " supposed " to

be potty trained by their 4th birthday. Molly was 5, and I've known some other

children with disabilities who were even older before they were finally potty

trained.

One thing to note, though, is the fact that whatever rewards system you use must

be meaningful to Isabella. If she doesn't care about the prize she gets after

10 stars or the candy or the doll that goes on the toilet, none of those will

motivate her. If you find something SHE wants and use that as a motivator, it

will work much better. That is true no matter what you are trying to motivate a

child to do.

Good luck! I look forward to reading the post where you brag about her finally

" getting it! "
