Dear Maureen,

Thank you for your post. I don't have any problem with the alchemists. In their time all this symbolism made sense to them. My question is only do we today need this type of symbolism to become whole? Must one learn the process they encourage or can we use modern methods of psychology and spirituality which are less foreign to us.

I agree we should have some knowledge since as you say it is in myth, art etc. But that knowledge is to understand those things, in my opinion, not to use ourselves to become whole. I like your saying it is art. As art, I can accept it. But, I never had a problem with Jung or others using these symbols. For me, they were not very meaningful, I need other symbols.

And what about the other things, Tart, astrology, I Ching? I can see why they fascinated Jung...but not,I think to making them part of his personal practices. I of course may be entirely wrong. To me this has nothing to do with being whole or belief or faith in G-d...or the Self.

Or don't metaphorical references count as things that happen in everyday life? *SOf course they do! but on the mental level.
