Study Links Common Chemical In Plastic To Lupus

Phthalates Are Used In Millions Of Plastic Products Including Toys

Ann Childers

(CBS) There is a new concern about a common chemical found in everyday

plastics.

Researchers at Indiana State University say they've found a link

between phthalates and the auto-immune disease lupus. Their study, in

mice, found that exposure to phthalates triggered lupus in mice who

were genetically predisposed to it.

Phthalates are used in millions of plastic products including toys and

medical devices. They are also used in many cosmetics and fragrances.

Recently, another study at the University of Rochester linked

phthalates to reproductive abnormalities in humans.
