Guest guest
My children (yes I have more than one) that has Down Syndrome were not potty trained till the age of 4 and 6 yrs old. It was due to the lack of muscles ( which can be diagnosed by a doctor)being developed. What helped for me was taking them out of diapers and pull ups all together and putting them in big girl panties. Since I was having communication problems as well...we used the sign language for potty and PECS (picture exchange communication support), which is just a fancy name for using pictures to communicate. I also would take my girls to the bathroom not only when they might have to go or when they asked but also when I had to go. So when I went I encouraged them to go potty with me at the same time. We would sit on the potty together and I would read a book to them while in the bathroom. This helped them take their mind off the potty and made it an enjoyable and a non stressful time. Every time I would do this...they would go! After 2 weeks they wanted to go and do it by them selves. Once they started going I made reading the book to them the reward for going. Some wise words that I have found to help Tell me and I will forget. Show me and I might remember. Involve me and I never forget. This is a great saying that was passed down to me and has been very useful...hope it helps. Tara > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > I need help!
