Dear Friends:

Here is our conference announcement. Please help us get the word out and feel free to contact me with any questions. Suzanne

"Transforming the Legacies of Conflict, War and Genocide through Dialogue"

One by One ConferenceNovember 13-17, 2006 The Passionist Center in Riverdale, New Yorkwww.0ne-by-one.org

Conference Vision Statement:

One by One, Inc. was created ten years ago in response to the profound experience of healing and personal transformation shared by its members during a week of dialogue between descendants of the Holocaust and descendants of the Nazi Era. Over the years we have shared our personal journeys through educational programs, publications, concerts, art exhibits and numerous speaking engagements in the U.S., Germany and Italy and have formed some deep and meaningful relationships. The foundation of our work is dialogue; it is what gives depth and meaning to our personal journeys and to all of our activities. Dialogue is the best tool we have for the prevention of future violence and for helping the increasing numbers of people worldwide, who are suffering from the aftermath of war, genocide and displacement. It is a path that can lead away from passing the legacy of trauma, hatred and prejudice on to future generations and toward personal liberation and social justice. We envision a conference that will:

Address the need for dialogue and reconciliation in the world today.

Explore the potential for sharing the in-depth dialogue process we have developed with other groups and organizations that are working with the aftermath of the Armenian genocide, and more recently with the conflicts and genocides in the Balkans, Peru, Sri Lanka, Rwanda, and possibly the Sudan.

Provide an opportunity to continue the examination of our own collective history, which is rooted in the Holocaust.

Offer a forum for individuals and organizations currently working in post-war countries with an eye toward exploring the usefulness and limitations of dialogue in different settings.

Enable us to share our work, compare techniques and strategies, encourage networking and answer the question, “How can we be of help to one another?â€

Offer sharing/storytelling groups to provide an experiential component and the opportunity for deeper and more personal connections that will enrich the entire conference experience.

The conference will consist of five days of presentations, workshops, experiential sharing groups and time together in a beautiful retreat on the Hudson River in New York City.

Our Planning to Date:

We are making excellent and exciting progress in the planning of our conference, "Transforming the Legacies of Conflict, War and Genocide through Dialogue," which will take place in Riverdale, New York, November 13-17, 2006.

The conference will begin on Monday November 13, 2006 at 12 Noon for registration, followed by opening remarks by two of our One by One founders. We will begin the afternoon by presenting One by One’s Dialogue concept, how we have shaped our dialogue model over 10 years and how our dialogue groups promote transformation.

We have scheduled an evening of presentations for Monday called “Peace building through Dialogue: Dialogue across Cultures" that will feature the work of Karuna Center for Peacebuilding, Rational Games, Compassionate Listening and Robin Moulds who will present her work with Dialogue groups in Pakistan/India.

We will begin each day, Tuesday-Friday, with an optional series of pre-breakfast meditations led by various healing groups and individuals.

On Tuesday and Wednesday mornings our conference will begin with 90 minute facilitated "story/sharing" sessions. These will be facilitated sessions, but not mini Dialogues.

Stanislas Kamanzi, the Rwandan Ambassador to the United Nations, will be our keynote speaker on Tuesday evening. His presentation will be followed by a talk given by ph Sebarenzi, former head of the Rwanda parliament, and a reception at Fordham University in Manhattan. This event will be open to the public. We are grateful to our Advisory Board member, Dr. Anie Kalayjian, for helping us make this event possible.

There are also exciting things planned for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday including an evening of stories of personal transformation from different cultural and historical perspectives on Wednesday and an afternoon panel discussion at the United Nations called “Trauma Transformation†on Thursday. We will end the conference with a discussion of the spiritual/philosophical meaning of transformation on Friday morning.

We are in the process of scheduling the remaining workshops and panels and will have more information in the weeks to come. Please see the attached tentative schedule for more details and please stay tuned to our website (www.one-by-one.org) for updated information.

ph Sebarenzi: former head of the Rwanda Parliament, has endured tragedy most of us cannot fathom. He lost both his parents, seven siblings, and numerous other relatives in the Rwandan genocide of 1994. Yet, years later, as a senior government official in a position to exact revenge, he instead pushed for peace and reconciliation. "Revenge is like adding guilt to victim hood." says Sebarenzi. "It solves nothing. At some point, we have to ignore the past and envision the future."

Rwandan Ambassador to the UN: H.E. Prof. ph Nsengimana:Ambassador Nsengimana has been the Permanent Representative of Rwanda to the United Nations since 13 June 2006. In this capacity he oversees all issues of interest to Rwanda at the UN. He also follows several issues closely in the Security Council. Prior to this appointment, Ambassador Nsengimana was a Special Advisor to the President of Rwanda, and served as a Cabinet Minister for six years.
