Hi All,

For those who use spacers I would be interested to know how you clean the inside of the spacer. When I was taking allergy shots, my allergist recommended the Aerochamber. When I first went to pulmonary rehab. several years ago, one of the respiratory therapists gave me an OptiChamber Advantage Valved Holding Chamber for Use with Metered Dose inhalers. I like it better because it will whistle if I inhale too fast. One of the respiratory therapists told me not to clean the inside, clear part as it would cause static. I called the company that makes the spacer. They told me that it was O.K. to clean the inside with a soft cloth. I would be interested to hear how others clean their spacers. I use my spacer with Flovent and Combivent when needed.

Thank you,

Norma

I just cleaned mine as a matter of fact, along with the acapella

devise and mouthpiece ... first I wash in hot soapy water, then I

soaked for about 5 minutes in a vinegar solution. Then air dry. At

least that is the recommended way according to my respiratory

specialist. Not necessary daily, but at least once or twice a week

when I think of it!

Hi Norma,

I find that the residue of medication can build up inside the chamber, even with regular cleaning and soaking. If it doesn't come off in the soaking, I usually swish my clean hands around the inside of the chamber to remove any stubborn residue.

Can I ask you a question about mucomyst, another topic? How much do you nebulise and how often? I nebulise 5ml every morning which really helps to break up the mucous. My specialist said I could use it twice a day if I found it helpful, but I usually become less productive as the day wears on.

I hope you are keeping well.

Hi Bunny, Thanks for your response regarding cleaning the spacers. I have already noticed that the one spacer that I cleaned the interior seems to work better than the others. I was just wanting to hear how others are cleaning their spacers. I use 2 ml of 10% Acetylcysteine (generic Mucomyst) with 0.63mg/3mL Xopenex twice daily. I use the vest while I am doing this treatment. The last two weeks of each month I follow this breathing treatment with Tobi. I have a hard time spelling Acetylcysteine so I usually say Mucomyst. When it is humid, the smell is quite unpleasant. I wish I had a room with an exhaust fan in which to do my treatments. I am trying to stay well by staying away from crowds. Our weather in Texas has been very wet and cold this winter. I am so thin that I really notice the cold weather.

We need the rain since we had been in a drought but could do without the sleet, freezing rain and snow which is not normal for this area. I hope that you are keeping well. Janet, Thanks for telling me how you clean your spacers. The company who makes the one that I use did mention using the vinegar and water solution to disinfect it. At the end of mine there is a rubber-like piece. I am not sure if I should put that part in the vinegar and water solution. I may need to call the company again. Thanks for your help. Norma

Omron instructs users to clean their portable nebulizers with vinegar and that is what I use, however I use a hot water and bleach soak on the mouth parts for my larger home unit.Eileen-FL

Hi Norma,

Thanks for your response re the mucomyst. It is interesting that you mix it with Xopenex, but I guess that helps to open the airways while the mucomyst does it's job. I agree the smell is unpleasant and the stickiness gets over everything (even my hair - lol)! I try to do it near an open door or window, but most of the time it blows back at me!

Sorry to hear that your weather has been extremely cold, it certainly doesn't help our condition, I hope you get some relief soon. We are enjoying summer right now, so I will send you some warm thoughts. My health hasn't been great since two hospitalisations in November/December, I get fatigued so easily. Still, I try to keep as active as possible each day, before succumbing to rest (lol)!

Take care and keep well.

Eileen, I clean my reusable nebulizers with a vinegar and distilled water solution. However, the smell of bleach bothers me. Thanks for your suggestion.
