However, there is considerable confusion and controversy in the real estate and legal communities about water damage and toxic mold contamination, particularly with regard to the difficult question of " How much mold is too much? " In an effort to address this problem and others, California State Senator Deborah Ortiz (D-Sacramento) has proposed the Toxic Mold Protection Act of 2001 (SB732), which would require the Department of Health Services to assess the feasibility of adopting permissible exposure limits (PEL's) for mold. This would be ground-breaking research, to say the least. The bill would also impose disclosure requirements on realtors, sellers and landlords and set standards for remediation. The bill is gaining momentum, and if it passes, will have a dramatic impact on parties to real estate transactions, landlords, insurers, policyholders, restoration contractors, lawyers and many others. This is a reminder about the American Air Quality Council Los Angeles Chapter Quarterly Workshop, where I will be making a presentation on SB732 and discussing how the Bill may affect you and/or your business. The workshop will be held on Wednesday, July 18, 2001 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Skirball Center, 2701 North Sepulveda Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90049. I encourage you to attend. A registration form is attached for your use. Please register immediately, as seating is very limited. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact my office at (714) 541-2767 or e-mail me at edcross@.... I look forward to seeing you at the workshop.
