Guest guest
Hi everyone I am wondering if others have this problem. Of course i know we are bothered by smoking. But my problem which is getting more severe as the years go on (i have had bronch since 1990) is how much i am bothered by the smoke residue on people who smoke or live in homes where people smoke, even if they aren't smoking around me. This problem has become really awful because my son has friends whose families smoke. When these young people come over, they have smoke residue all over them and i get awful symptoms of chest pain and chest tightness. I had to ask them not to come in while I am home. If my son goes to their homes and comes home, his clothes and skin and hair all reek of smoke. Its hard to tell a teen not to visit his friends or have them over. Of course nobody smokes in my house. Its gotten so extreme that if he visits someone's house in this situation, i make my son take off all his clothes, throw in washer and get in shower while i have to leave my house, even on a cold winter night. I know it would be great if he had other friends but i can't change that at this point. Does anyone else have this problem? Dorothy
Guest guest
Yes, but yesterday was the worst. I was in Church and a man had to pass in front of me to get to his seat. He wasn't even sitting next to me but the dead smoke odor was so bad, I had to get up and move my seat. So, yes, I'm sure others are in the same boat. > >Reply-To: bronchiectasis >To: bronchiectasis >Subject: question about being bothered by smoke residue >Date: Mon, 01 Jan 2007 19:37:49 -0000 > >Hi everyone >I am wondering if others have this problem. Guest guest
Yes, I too am bothered by smoke. Fortunately my friends and family don't smoke and I do have a smoke-free home although my husband LOVES to light real wood fires in our fireplace until I got on his case ... so we have a cord of wood sitting outside that will be there forever if I can help it, ha ha! California has some pretty strict anti-smoking laws fortunately and some cities have banned even smoking on the sidewalks! But I was lining up to get movie tickets with my asthmatic daughter the other day and a couple in front of us was smoking away with wisps of the stuff coming right at us! We both had to cover our mouths with our scarves and coats and the couple turned and was surprised at our reaction! They actually apologised. To think I was once a pack a day smoker until I quit cold turkey 30 years ago! Can't stand the stuff! I am going back to Europe again next year and am not looking forward to being surrounded by smokers ... they have gotten a little better but still not good enough. Most people in Europe smoke, it is really nasty, especially in restaurants but at least they have now sectioned off smokers and non-smokers! Yes, that smell gets into your clothes, right through to your underwear ... if only they knew what the hell they were doing!!! Janet in California Yes, but yesterday was the worst. Guest guest
Hi Dorothy, Yes, I cannot be around "any" smoke and even smoke on clothing causes my asthma to flare up which of course effects my bronchiectasis. It’s a vicious cycle. My friends are fortunately nonsmokers, but some relatives smoke, but not around me. Still their smoke is on their clothing and I don't think they fully realise how bad this can impact on someone with respiratory disease and allergies. When I'm in a hospital and a nurse comes in after a smoke break it bothers my asthma. I'm trying to get nonsmoking nurses and others, but it’s hard when there are not enough nurses on staff at the hospital. I cannot be near or around any smoke or my lungs immediately become more congested and it turns into pneumonia. My parents were never smokers, but we used to have a wood stove. They got rid of it some years back, because it was so hard on my lungs and causing me to be sick. Fortunately, Nova Scotia (province) has gone smoke-free. Yay!!!! This makes going to shopping and restaurants is possible and no worry about others smoke! ) BTW.... Nurses and other staff including doctors are NOT supposed to be smoking on hospital property, but I think some of "still" doing so. Good-luck with your sons friends. Perhaps knowing how their "smoky smell" is hurting your health might afford to them another incentive to quit and live a healthier lifestyle. Guest guest
Hi Dorothy, I know a number of people who have the same problem including myself. You could encourage the young people to quit smoking, but that would take too long. I know many people who clear out their garage, put in carpeting, old furniture, TV, computer and it's a hang out for the kids and their friends. Another family who live in a bungalow, the son uses the side entrance and goes straight into the basement with his friends. I had a similar problem when my son was younger, he worked in a restaurant after school and came home - clothes reeking of smoke. I asked him to leave his winter jacket in the car. He always kept his hair short, no problem there. When he brought friends over, I made them stay in his room. After they walked through the house, I shut off the furnace and opened all windows. He moved out of the house when he was 23, he quit smoking then because he didn't want his 'new' apartment to reek of smoke. Now he's older, plays in a hockey team, goes to the gym after work, ditto for his friends, none smoke. We have no smoking in most of Canada. People are fed up with the extra taxes that were slapped on the price of a pack of cig. and the majority quit. The tobacco growers in Ontario are now using their farmland to grow organic mushrooms, tomatoes, they changed the crop, of course some were caught growing weeds. Toronto started the anti smoking campaign copying california. It's working. Keep encouraging your son's friends to quit smoking. Educate them, they will save money on top of that. http://www.lilithgallery.com/articles/2006/canadas_smokinglaws.html karin > > Hi everyone > I am wondering if others have this problem.
