Guest guest
Bob, Call the chair lift place you plan on buying it from I think they would be able to help you.As others in similiar situations have probably asked them the same questions. Good Luck! Subject: Question about Midicare To: " pain " <Hugs-N-Pain > Date: Friday, September 11, 2009, 8:34 AM Hi Everyone, I was put on Medicare as of 09/01/2009 and I'm clueless. How would I find out if Medicare covers wheel chair lifts or ramps for a van. I just got my power chair but can not get it out of the apt. I need the wheel chair to get around where they don't offer the scooter. Thanks for any advice! Pogo Bob
Guest guest
Sorry Bob but as far as I have been able to find out, Medicare does NOT cover either the ramp or the lifts...I too have a powerchair.but I can't get it out of the house because the step is too high...I REALLY wish they had given me a scotter instead of the chair, but they didn't and now I'm stuck with it. I DO use the chair around the house when I HAVE too, but I hate to use it..but the fact they will buy you the chair and NOT give you anyway to get it out of the house and to the places you need to go is STUPID.. Guest guest
Bob, I think that Medicare will only pay for the power chair. that is what they told my Mama. they will not pay for the scooter, the ramp for the power chair, or and of the accessories for it. at least that is what they told my mama. the only extra she got was the thing to hold her o2 tank. but if you look on Craig's list or ebay you might could find one much cheaper than new. Guest guest
Glad you found your ramp on ebay Bob. that is where I have found several things I was looking for my Mother. they have the ebay stores but sometimes individuals have them up for sale if they no longer need them. Guest guest
I totally agree with you. I've had my chair or nearly 5 yrs and I get it doesn't have 3 miles on it. Well maybe a bit more as my son has played with it. Medicare pays $5500 bucks for a great piece of machinery that sits in my livingroom. I have a ramp that goes off of the sidewalk to the parking lot just outside my door, but it seems steep to me and I'm afraid of toppling over if I go own it. I don't feel safe with it at all. I'm going to ask the apartment manager if they can make it less steep so I can at least use it to walk my dog. I just moved from a house to this apartment the 1st of June because my landlord decided to sell the house after I lived there 5 yrs. I hated so bad to move. Had to give my lab away. I miss him so much. But I was able to keep my beagle/basset! He's my baby, but so was the lab. I hate that I had to find him a new home, but I did find him a very good one with a family. Anyway, I've priced the lifts for the car an they want between $1600 and $2000 for that and who can afford that on SSDI income? Surely not me! You are right, it is VERY stupid for Medicare to pay so much money for these scooters and power chairs, which is what I have, and us not be able to use them even for Dr. appts. I have to have someone go with me or take me to my appts because I can't walk from the parking lot to the building or to the Dr's office once I get inside. I have to use a wheel chair. This is a major inconvenience, for me and other people. Anyway, I will get off my soap box! I just had to put my 2 cents in.... ~Tommie~ www.myspace.com/tommiejj PH, CFS, FMS, Diabetes, Sleep Apnea, Restless Leg Syndrome Don't waste energy second-guessing what you're missing or what can go awry.
