It's long been whispering to me. Please share it. " When Sargon succeeded in unifying a number of the city-states of ancient Mesopotamia, he appointed his daughter to the office of High Priestess of E-kish-nu-gal, the great temple of the Moon god Nanna- Suen, and his consort, the Moon goddess Ningal at Ur. She took the title of En-hedu-anna, meaning Chief Priestess of the ornament of heaven, (i.e., the moon.) This appointment turned out to be no petty example of nepotism. Sargon was too strategically pragmatic for that. Enheduanna is the first known writer in human history. She produced a number of temple hymns and other poetry, but when carefully analysed, her three major poems to the Goddess Inanna exhibit a degree of profound gut-ripping honesty and psychological sophistication that mark her as a sheer vertical genius, unparalleled even by Shakespeare. Shakespeare's " A Midsummer Night's Dream " owes some of its charm and integrity to the general psychological proposition that disruptions in the archetypal dimension must be resolved preparatory to resolution of conflicts in the mundane world. That was brilliant for its time. Enheduanna went much further and was dramatically more precise. She recounted in chilling detail a woman's experience of alienation from the feminine self by animus, resolution of that, followed by ego-inflation leading to possession by what Jung called the Great Mother archetype; the violent psychotic consequences, ending with emergence of the divine dynamic feminine, first in its terrifying form, but when allowed to become civilised and integrated, acquiring its natural stunningly shining numinosity. ... " go. read... *** aside: I find it amazing, the way this spoke to recent dreams. This one: What men or gods are these? What maidens loath? What mad pursuit? What struggle to escape? Dream: I was at the gynecologist's in a dentist chair, and the doctor said he had to do a hysterectomy. Taking out a long pair of pliers, he warned me (nicely, jovial, matter-of-fact) that it would hurt. I panicked. Begged for pain pill. He said I could have 'something light.' Best he could do. I had on a red tank top, nothing else, and this was obviously a giving birth thing. (I used to teach Lamaze.) Here comes pain, but grin and breathe! No choice. Birth in reverse maybe, and a sort of rape. At any rate, as he starts, I'm aware that Lovelace is there on my right side! (Lovelace: see http://www.jungcircle.com/muse/negcap.htm ; one of the first English novels. Hugely read for a good 150 years to huge effect.) He's furious. Is going to kill the doctor! I'm helpless, speechless, and -- maybe in league with him.....? I think so, but am also horrified. Killing? I'm afraid. I see his things (Lovelace) on the sofa by him. Handwritten papers, letters or manuscript, and beneath it, a large ugly exacto knife! He's just waiting.... it's going to happen... I can't stop him... I wake up. With a horrible pain in my low guts. But the loss of the uterus -- menopause? -- I was thinking it's a time of female power, too, the day before. Letting go of that earth mother identity. What do I (we, as woman) birth now? ... She took the title of En-hedu-anna, meaning Chief Priestess of the ornament of heaven, (i.e., the moon.) Dear Deb, This piece has a big jolt for me too. As you know, I was recently in Turkey (by way of an amazing series of synchronicities which I'll not go into here). For me the highlight of the trip was a trip into the ancient 'land of Ur' refered to above. The modern day Sanliurfa (ancient Ur) and (also known as Edessa where St. - ala Gospel of - was supposed to have lived and worked - interesting huh?) is also the birthplace of Abraham and of Job. We visited caves where both were said to have lived. One day we took a very dusty and hot bus trip south (about 5 miles from the Syrian border) to ancient Harran. It is the site of the temple of the Moon (also known as Sin) and spent an eiry few hours there. The temple is actually deep within a more recent (see pic below) citadel built in Roman times. As we decended into that rock structure I asked our German guide where the Sun temple was. He was shocked that I even knew of it. He merely said that it is two levels further " down " and that it was too dangerous to go there. I didn't press it, but was intruiged nonetheless. We returned to Sanliurfa exhausted and bemused at having been in (for me) was such an ancient structure (certainly more than 3,000 years old). On a personal note, I also have identified Inanna as the feminine figure in my first BIG dream which I have share here onlist many times in the past. You'll also enjoy this snippet from a recent sermon I heard delivered here in KC a few weeks ago by Matt Fox. At one point he said (paraphrasing)....There is much now being said about the return of the feminine. Its true, the Goddess is back.....and she's pissed!! Enjoyed your sharing...as always. Here is a pic of the Moon Temple: http://www.pbase.com/dosseman/image/29523501 Greg _______________________________________________ Join Excite! - http://www.excite.com The most personalized portal on the Web! I'm puzzled. I'm not sure why you'd think this. I've enjoyed Greg's posts about his trip and I *thought* I'd posted something to that effect. And if I only thought it and considered it done then let me rectify that right now: I've completely enjoyed every pixel you've sent, Greg, and deeply hope you'll package up a few more when you have time. Maybe it's because you've given me so much to think about that I can't remember what I've thought and what I thought I thought. So, in the best Oliver Twist accent: "More." Guest guest
And by the way -- Today in the Book of Days Adonia, Graeco-Roman (Jul 19 - 20) A holy enactment of the wedding of Adonis and Aphrodite took place today, in Greece, and this festival also commemorated the zenith of Adonis's six-month presence in the world. In other words, it represented the peak of vegetative growth. The Adonia is closely related to the ancient Egyptian Opet festival for the siblings/lovers Isis and Osiris, held at this time ... Guest guest
Thanks to those who have expressed interest in my recent Turkey trip. I have been slow to inject it here, not knowing how many would be interested. And, frankly, my work load has prevented me from being more pro-active than I have liked anyway. But will try to share more, since it appears there is some energy for the discussion. It involves a complex of events and people that is, well, overwhelming to me in some ways. Too much to explain at the moment. Thanks to Deb, Alice, Marte, and several other fellow firesitters for the encouragement. Not being coy here; just have so many competing objectives at present (not the least of which are my two oldest children both getting married this fall).... Guest guest
Hi, Greg! This post isn't really " re Femina " (so far as I'm yet aware?) but that's how I can sign on here right now (5:52 p.m., " local time " ). I certainly " feel for " everything you've said here, so this is (for the moment, any way) " just a quickie " to say that I, myself (The " Minority of One " for the title of a 1970's 'rag') would immensely appreciate anything/everything you might feel disposed to share here about your trip to Turkey. As I think you know [ " by now " :-(? :-)], I'm a member/participant of/ with several " lists " , all but one (so far, any way) primarily defined by reference to Jung. Among us all -- there, as well as here -- we've periodically struggled over what aspects of " politics " belong to and among our sharings. Like many of us here (however much we do or don't feel disposed to " talk about it here " ) I am in deep 'distrait' over the current World Scene, and feeling rather badly helpless as to any direct in- body (so to say) participation or contribution in what some of us Westerners maybe overly provincially (?) have long (at least in part) referred to as " the cradle of civilisation " . So -- though I don't believe your purpose in going to Turkey was primarily political activism [?! :-)], as I am now full of so-far unshed tears for friends and family in that general part of the world, I would certainly immensely appreciate anything you might feel like posting here about your trip to Turkey. N.B. Thanks for your last-weekend's off-list e-mails, and " mes apologies " for not getting back to you (in that way) sooner! love and greetings to all, marte > > > > Thanks to those who have expressed interest in my recent Turkey trip.
