Hi Sandie, I have to disagree with you about port-a-caths. I have required a port-a-cath for about 10+ years now and they work great. We use mine all the time, and I'll be getting a new port next week. My veins would not last anytime with a heplock and a nurse "must" place the heplock, but I have run out of veins for them. Ports are awesome and not just for chemo. We do blood work through my port, too, and have it for emergencies. Yes, they can get blood clots and can develop infections, but so can piccs, etc. If you need a port and have poor veins a central line is the way to go. My ports in all the years I have had them have developed clots and more recently have developed fibrin sheaths requiring removal, but I do have congenital vein problems, so at some point the blood clots would have happened regardless of the port. In all these years I have never had a port-a-cath blood related

infection. The vast majority of my friends on the 400+ CF e-mail group (Cystic-L) have never experienced any complications with their port-a-caths. Some people have even had their port for 5+ years and some for 10 or more. I love ports they have greatly improved my quality of life an have lead to far less poking for veins that are simply unavailable. Hi Sandie,

Liz..thanks for your feedback. Well, yea..we all have prefs, I'm sure.

I've seen the good and the not so good stories about ports. So, for me, I choose not to go that route for as long as I possibly can.

For some, however, the meds they're infused with are so strong, they need to use the port, for it would tear their veins up. That's not the case with me. I have very very good infusion nurses. Most of the time I don't even feel the stick. The cath slides in smooth as butter.

But, as I said, dif strokes for dif folks

Sandie
