Guest guest
I was just going to ask the same thing. I was misdiagnosed as BPD three years ago. Turned out I have Grave's Disease, which is a severly hyperthyroid, which can sometimes mimic the symptoms. They're *supposed* to do I thyroid scan, I heard later, but my husband was deployed at the time, and it was an Army thing, and... just a mess. Plus I found out the therapist and his partners specialized in BPD, something that neither I nor the Army nor the Army's insurance knew. They were experimenting with different drugs and such, which, actually, aggrevated the orginal problem, which hadn't been diagnosed yet... When I figured out what was going on (after getting seen for a seemingly unrelated symptom--thyroid tremors and doing extensive research myself) I left that therapist, and never got the chance to see another, due to moves and such. I did get treatment for my Grave's, though, or am undergoing treatment, and my " symptoms " are getting much better. Depends on who she is around. BPD is so confusing.
Guest guest
I agree. BPD is often misdiagnosed, especially since many who have it are unwilling to look at their own symptoms. It's really confusing and tough to know what's going on. I sometimes think that my brother has features of personality disorders (BPD and narcissistic) but most of the time try to stay away from diagnosing my family beyond what I need for my own understanding and healing. I find that no matter how much I learned in school, and how much I continue to read for my own understanding, it's still completely confusing when it's your own family. There's just too much involvement to remain impartial. Even being in my profession, I was too involved with the dynamic in my family to realize my mom was BPD, until one day my fiance gently pointed it out after a particularly bad visit. Then I started reading surviving the borderline parent, and realized how much of the book was applicable to my childhood! Up until then I only half believed that she might be BPD! whatacutemom wrote: Does your brother have BPD? Was he misdiagnosed? Guest guest
Bunny, If you read the entire DSM info on BPD, you will see that it does say that as well as the longer lasting mood shifts. The point it makes is that there is no core identity. Also, it talks about how some Bpd don't act out in anger/rages in the DSM; they act in or hold in their anger for frears of annihilation by it. my nada is on that, unless really provoked by her fears will not shot into a rage. I think they steadily burn if off on the phone destroying people with smear campaigns. If it really would help, get her to a specialist and have her dx'd. But i think that if you read the entire DSM literature, not just the 9 criteria, you will feel OK again. Greg. --- whatacutemom wrote: > Does your brother have BPD? Was he misdiagnosed?
