Guest guest
a was diagnosed with ADHD about 18 months ago. She loses focus and her memory seems to be shot because of it. She can hop from one activity the next in a heartbeat. Her attention span is pretty much non exsistent. We have her on medication for it, it helped for a while, but it doesn't seem to be doing the trick anymore. Tina Subject: here's my curiosity for all... To: " mosaicds " <MosaicDS > Date: Wednesday, April 29, 2009, 5:57 PM I would like to ask if anyone know/has/direct me into the way for knowledge of Autism, and ADHD. I'm currently learning some more about the two.. And was also wondering if anyone could educate me more.... How's everyone's week thus far, I've been a bit busy I'll admit. Guest guest
:Hi Tina, Have you tried Occupational Therapy. Isabella can also jump from one thing to another quicker than anything I have ever seen. I was told she has sensory issues. If she grabs something she should not have, by the time I take it off of her she already has something else in her hand. We can go on like that for 5 minutes until I finally catch her.. My OT said so many kids are diagnosed with ADD and ADHD and now they are finding out that is not what they have they are really sensory seekers. If she is a sensory seeker that could be why the medications are not working. Guest guest
Casey - For knowedge about Autism - I would go to the Autism Speaks web site. http://www.autismspeaks.org/ - I would not go to CAN - Cure Autism Now - as I don't believe it is something that can or should be cured. I think there are things that a person with Autism can learn to perform better in a Non-Autistic society but I don't think that it needs to be cured - there is nothing WRONG with an austistic person, they are just different. Just like there is nothing WRONG with a person who has MDS they are just different. http://kidshealth.org/kid/health_problems/brain/autism.html# - is another site that explains it well. Guest guest
Actually, Darlene, there is a movement that is claiming that autism can be cured. Jennie McCarthy claims her son was cured. People " are " recovering from autism. Guest guest
- I don't believe that you can " Cure " Autism just like you can't cure DS - it is who you are. Yes, you can learn social cues and become more involved but who you are does not change - when we were growing up - we had kids who were loaners, who had only one or two good friends and they were fine. They did not like crowds, that was just who they were and that was fine. They had one specialty subject and stunk at others. They were shy - Now they have a name for it, they call it Autistic - I believe those people who claim to have cured their children, like Jennie McCarthy, are mistaken. Her child was either misdiagnosed or learned behaviors that overcame his autistic trait. Just like there are many features of DS that are in the general population (flat feet, curved pinkies, large gap between toes) there are many features of Autism that are in the general population and I think Autism is the latest diagnosis craze as it gets Federal money - everyone wants that dx. I think it is a dream to CURE autism - just like you can not cure MDS - you can teach our children to become a productive part of society (have a job, family) but they will always have MDS. As a computer programmer, I can tell you that a lot more than a small percentage of the programmers in my company have a form of Autism. They are fine - they are really good at what they do - they contribute. Let them be who they are and teach them how to function in a society where you need to have some social skills to get a job - not to keep it. Computers don't mind if you don't make small talk, or dress fashionably. Darlene - > > > Actually, Darlene, there is a movement that is claiming that autism can be > cured. Guest guest
Yesterday, the news said they found a genetic link to Autism. Something that was suspected the entire time by most. Darlene is right on her comments here. You can not " cure " Autism. Either you are misdiagnosed (this is happening at an extreme rate in America) or with therapy you can help alleviate the symptoms. There are many things that can cause " Autistic Tendencies " . It could be diet, it could be environment or it could be sensory integration disorder. These things can cause symptoms that look like Autism, but is not true Autism. Thanks Darlene for your input on this. I think it is important to make sure no one is confused about Autism since so many of our children do have " Autistic Tendencies " and since you are a mom of children both with Autism and mDs, you have a wealth of insight and information! Guest guest
I also am am mother who has both a child with autism and a child with MDS. I totaly agree that autism is not curable. For those people whose children have recovered I believe that the symptoms were caused by an allergy to food or they had sencory processing disorder which can have the same symptoms as Autism. Change of diet has not helped my daughter, sensory diet has helped some, and there are some supplements that help, but she will Always have autism. my job is to help her learn to self regulate so she can function in our world. just my two cents.
