Severe flank pain

Hi Everyone

HELP!!! Severe right flank pain has returned today. It came on

very suddenly, and is accompanied again by a purple rash, this time

on face and chest. I felt perfectly ok, and was washing my car when

wham. It was so intense I thought I was going to pass out. Managed

to get indoors, where I have been sick, and have a really bad

headache now!!! Have taken some Pethidine, the only thing that works

for the pain, and it is gradually subsiding, but I feel totally

exhausted.

I don't want to go down to my GP again, as I am seeing him tomorrow

anyway, but wondered if any of you guys could have any clues....as so

far tests have revealed zilch. My temperature is normal by the way.

Pierre could this be due to my low BP, or is it as I suspect a flare

up of the IGAN, this is beginning to follow a familiar pattern, ok

for a couple of weeks or even months, then off we go again.

Thanks guys and sorry to be posting yet another whine!!!

Best wishes to all, particularly Walt for continued well being.

I doubt that is related in any way to low blood pressure , unless

whatever it is is causing the low blood pressure. I don't know what it

is though. What does your doctor say about that purple rash? That part

of it sure does sound like it could be HSP, especially when you add that

to the fact that you have IgAN symptoms. But I assume they must have

thought of that and dismissed it, as we have discussed before. Severe,

*sudden* flank pain is absolutely not characteristic of IgAN. There has

to be something else going on, I think. It's the suddeness and severity

of it together that are puzzling. If it were me, to get something like

that sorted out, especially with sudden pain severe enough to make you

almost feel like you will pass out, I would go to Emergency or at least

my doctor while I have the symptoms. Keep after them to find out. I

suspect the fact that you have IgAN may be a " red herring " at this

point, and distracting medics' attention from something else that might

be going on.

Hope you feel better this morning.

Dear All

First off thanks Pierre for the message, and the advice, which I have taken

up. This is rather interesting and seems bizarre, but I can see the sense

in it. Anyway as you know I have degeneration of the spine, and am due to

undergo nerve block injections next week. Here is an excerpt from my Pain

Management Consultant to my GP:-

'I think this lady has significant signs and symptoms of thoraco lumbar

spine, which may be related to spinal origin, but are also secondary to her

kidney disease and problems. I have explained how the kidney and the

thoraco lumbar spine have a similar nerve supply and that they share the

sympathetics and therefore renal pathology can give rise to secondary spasm

in the muscular skeletal symptom or even synergise with the primary muscular

skeletal problem.

So from what if I have understood correctly, it is my back that is giving me

the pain, albeit situated in the right kidney area, what they call 'referred

pain'. This would certainly explain the suddenness of it all and the fact

that it nearly made me pass out. A call to my Nephrologist who is also in

'cahoots' with my PMC, is that he feels that the IGAN certainly won't be

helping matters, but would not give me pain as bad as this, one wise head on

very knowledgeable shoulders Pierre, fancy being my Neph!!! I pay well

LOL!!!!!

Anyway that is what I have been advised today. No promises were made that

these nerve blocks will kill or cure....but I have been given a reassurance

that it would certainly ease matters. My recent '24 urine catch' revealed

the usual blood which was microscopic, but no protein in it. Function was

estimated at around 85%., so I am happy with that. Also interesting ESR

score was 35 which is a test, though non definitive way of detecting

inflammation within the body. Normal acceptable levels are 1-9, so

something is inflamed. Low BP is being taken up between them all, to

decide what or who I should see next.

Will keep you all posted, and am glad to say that as sudden as this flared

up, it has quickly settled down, leaving me feels slight jaded ( and very

PEED OFF!!).

I shall try to keep smiling, but on days this like it sure is hard work.

Bless you all & keep well.

.

I find that if I do more or eat more than I should, I get some pain -

probably not in your league, but I find it doesn't respond to drugs just

rest. Can you make a similar correlation?

Thanks for the idea , and agreed, if I overdo things, then I do get a

more persistant pain. However it seems the medics have a different angle on

this, so it is the wait and see game for me again.

Whilst writing I forgot to say Pierre, the rash was put down to 'a nervous

rash' i.e. my body's way of objecting to the pain!!!! I don't consciously

get nervous, perhaps sub-consciously I do. This rash needs further

investigation in my opinion, so have requested same.

Will keep you all posted.

Best wishes

Hi

Before I was diagnosed with IgAN, I had a very similar

episode, but w/out the rash. We were @ the grocery

store and I fell on the ground. The pain was also in

my right side and VERY severe. I went to the emergency

room, they thought it was a kidney stone, but could

not find anything. They just gave me morphine for the

pain. I do not think it is a coincidence that we and

others have this. I hope that you feel better.

Wow. That explanation is quite a mouthful. It's not far-fetched though,

I think. I have heard before that most of the organs and other stuff in

the abdomen area share the same nerve pathways, and because of it, it's

very hard to tell exactly where a pain is coming from, because it might

not be felt exactly at its source. A sudden, severe,

almost-make-me-faint type of pain such as you described would more

likely be of musculoskeletal origin than from anything IgAN could do, I

think. I don't understand why you would get a rash with it though. I

don't buy that explanation for the rashes. Sounds like maybe you need to

see a dermatologist.

Thanks for sharing your experience with me.....mmmmmm puzzling this little

mystery isn't it. If and when my medics get to the bottom of it I will of

course let you know.

Best wishes
