Guest guest
Angie, I have the same problem with ac. It is very hot in Pa., right now and I don't even have a fan on. I just can't stand it, it makes everything worse. It is gets much hotter I will have to put it on for my daughters. At that point I will put on sweaters or sweats. Guest guest
Angie: I was just diagnosed with RA in January of this year, so I don't have a lot of experience with this at all. Just noticed recently since the warmer weather has appeared that I can't handle being anywhere that uses a strong air conditioner. Restaurants, grocery stores, retail stores all make it hard for me to get out and do what I need to. I find that I become so chilled and achey after being exposed to the air conditioning that I can actually have a mini-flare. Glad you brought this up....because I thought I was alone on this. Guest guest
Angie, I find that if I am sitting under a vent or in clear shot of the air, like in the car, It really bothers me. I try to keep my joints away from the cold air. But being in Phoenix it is hard to do. But the heat really helps the flares from fibro. So I just take the good with the bad. Guest guest
Angie, Air conditioning is very difficult for me. when I was working I found that if I used a scarf around my neck it helped a lot. The problem for me was the vent pushing the cold air down on me. Also I don't get along very well with fans. You might try checking out where the vents are or staying out from underneath the fans. It helped me a lot. I always where long sleeves and a sweater when I go shopping to keep the cold off of me too. God bless, Althea

Guest guest
Angie, I live in Texas, and work in an office full of GUYS who are actually polar bears in disguise. i don't think the a/c cuts off all day long- and I'm right under a vent-must be 65 degrees. Yesterday I wore a tank top and overshirt, skirt, and flipflops to work. Within 1 hour I was also wearing a fleece winter jacket, chenille socks, and an afghan over my lap. I thought I was supposed to have hot flashes at this age! What a fashion statement. I look like a very clean bag lady. I was never so happy to walk out in 95 degree heat....and this goes on all summer. My polar bear daughter is in Japan for 2 wks so I have control over the a/c at home for a change.! it's great, but it will be worth freezing a little to get her back home. I can always wear sweats and a blankie.... Jane > I was wondering if any one else is hurting alot when in air > conditioning. I can't find any literature on it. > @@ Hi , If one compares the general consensus of information regarding the effects of air conditioning, it seems it encourages mold and mildew. Symptoms reported are : headaches , sinus problems, sore throats , aches & pains in joints ... etc Furthermore, since the windows tend to be closed the air quality is poor quality which effect & lower negative ions which helps a person breathe better and helps enhance their immune system. Therefore not a very healthy environment. Here, below, is a couple of links for your consideration. Air conditioning,Comfortable or unhealthy - http://tinyurl.com/2dc6ue7 Your Unhealthy Home - http://tinyurl.com/29rldqz Alternatives to Air Conditioning - http://tinyurl.com/29wvv47 However, , some people may need air conditioning due to the obvious added comfort which indirectly maybe beneficial to their health. The elderly with health conditions particularly, are the ones that mostly fall in this category. Regardless, the best solutions and precautions in conjunction with air conditioning ( if used) is to: [1] - Keep a window/s open to allow fresh air inside TO CIRCULATE. [2] - Add plants i.e Spider plants, cactus ( increases negative ions, best air purifier, improves mood , lowers EMF) [3] - Change air conditioning filters every 3 months for best results. Maybe the recommendations in sorts is a little more pricey on the utility bill for those whom utilize air conditioning , but your health is a worthy investment. My humble opinion , of course ;-] Hope this aforementioned data is of assistance. Cordially, Ed
Guest guest
I live in a two-story apartment which has a central air conditioning unit which is old and wheezy (cheap landlady). It seems to be important, for many reasons, to change the filter on the unit monthly, because if the filter gets really dirty the machinery will labor more, and will drive up your electricity bill even more. Plus, a decent filter will trap some of the junk in the air that makes you sneeze. Pam Maltzman

The suggestion for replacing filters every 3 months is for NEW / PRESENT DAY air conditioners. However, if the system is old, then yes they're not as efficient, thus one would & should replace the filters more than every 3 months. 1-2 months maybe more suitable & recommended in regards to air quality. Albeit, this is why I added the safeguard of the plants suggested. They are excellent air purifiers/cleaners . NASA even utilized & chose them over hi tech gadgetry for their space missions to maintain air quality for their astronauts. So even if one neglected to change the filters accordingly,( time wise) as long as they implemented the other recommendations, they still will have decent air quality with other benefits. While the air conditioner is active. Nevertheless, Pamela, thanks for the supplemental information, it's much appreciated :-] Ed
Guest guest
Hi, Ed: > [2] - Add plants i.e Spider plants, cactus ( increases negative ions, > best air purifier, improves mood , lowers EMF) Interesting. I did not know that spider plants and cactus would purify air. Usually I am neglectful of houseplants, but I'll take a look next time I'm near a nursery department. By " cactus, " would that also include the succulent desert plants which are fleshy but not spiny? I've seen pots of those and they are definitely easy on the eyes. Thanks. Other plants do not have OR are not as effective in lowering EMF . I figured one might as well get the plants with the most versatility. EMF are generated by computers and other electrical equipment or appliances. More on this in regards to plants in the link below. LINK: http://tinyurl.com/n2fsc7 Pam, also, other plants that purify air are: * -philodendron * -pothos * -gerbera daisy * -chrysanthemum * -English ivy * -Chinese Evergreen * -bamboo palm * -snake plant (mother-in-law's tongue) * -marginata However, the cactus I refer to is the (Cereus Peruvianuf), the spiny type; sorry. Of course you could use the Spider plant OR Peace lily in conjunction with a plant from the above list if you're interested in a more attractive scenery. Lastly, Lilies and numerous other plants are poisonous to cats. So, if you have a cat , let me know. I can direct and refine your selection. accordingly. Guest guest
Hi, Ed: I do have cats, so the Peace Lily would not be a good choice for me. I seem to remember that spider plants are quite common, although I cannot remember what they look like. Which of the plants on your list are okay to have around cats? I can go looking for a couple of them with my next paycheck. I have seen cute little spiny cacti in garden pots. Not sure I want them around cats because of the spines. We do have a lot of EMF around here. We have at least four computers around here, most of them belonging to my sig. other. Thanks for the information. The Spider plant looks like this > http://tinyurl.com/2cpn85y These are the most popular type of Spider Plants. You can get them almost anywhere in varied sizes. You can use anyone of the plants in conjunction with the Spider Plant from the list provided, below. [Non-Toxic Plants and Your Cat] : http://tinyurl.com/6fozx However, all plants purify the air in varying degrees. Albeit, the top performers are Spider plants, Bamboo Palm & Palm which are also safe for cats; for particularly cleaning the air. Cactus/cacti may puncture the cat's skin and cause infection and most lilies are poisonous to cats. So yes, not good or safe choices for cats.
