celery and a *small* amount of 100% natural peanut butter and not the name brand

stuff get 100% natural peanut butter since it has no sugar/syrup added to it. It

is real oily. Also put out cheese trays with olives/pickles on it and peperoni

but no crackers.

Harry or ,

I need some advice please.

We are hosting a reunion for folks who attended the Oklahoma School for

the Blind this weekend and I have been tasked to come up with some snack

type deserts for folks to munch on. We are making some brownies for the

non-diabetic types. You had earlier suggested the celery with cream

cheese. What other suggestions can you give me? Thanks, the Ancient

One...

sugar too low for a long enough time that I really do not want to try again.

besides I have been insulin dependant for twenty years and this is the first

time that I had any problems now laset week I also experianced low blood

sugar readings so my doctor al tered my insulins slightly different and it

Fruit salad is always a nice treat. Nuts, lots of them. Apples and bananas

and that all time favorite donuts.

Harry since I do confuse easily please be patient with me. In my attempt

to try a Dr. Atkins style diet I am keeping carbs low low low. Still when

I see you suggest bananas and peanuts I shudder.

My own Dr. just mentioned bananas and I don't think that is the route to

go based on what I've seen on this list. Also peanuts are not nuts, but

legumes.

Okay folks,

Just about the time I think I have an inkling of what is going on here I

find I must have wandered off into the Ozone Layer.

Doughnuts for treats? Bananas?

The nuts make some sense to me. If we have doughnuts why not brownies?

I obviously need a little help here.

you could make some deviled eggs, not very many carbs, nuts like, walnuts,

almonds, pecans, etc, celery, cabbage, cheese of just about any kind, pork

skins have no carbs, cucumbers, radishes, broccoli, natural peanut butter,

the kind like you use to get in that box of stuff that welfare would give

you each month for being poor. make some bacon and mix it up in some cream

cheese and put it on celery, or use the filling for a deviled egg in the

celery, cream cheese on a slice of cucumber is also good, tuna salad on

celery will work, also, take some fresh veggies like bell peppers, cabbage,

broccoli, garlic and onion and chop it real fine and mix with some cream

cheese and add some bacon bits, makes a wonderful spread for other things

like, cucumber slices, celery sticks, piece of romaine letis or ice burg

letis, etc. go easy with onions how ever, onions have more carbs then you

would think. most fruit is high in carbs. avocados are another low carb

veggie, high in fat but not carbs. so use a avocado and other green veggies

and cream cheese and make a spread for celery or cucumbers. and just pretend

it is what ever you wish it to be.

Speaking of being 67 years old, at the age I am now my great grandmother

lived for forty more years. If that is to be my life, I want those years

to be comfortable and as healthy and productive as I can make them. I am

only 65 and have or may have much more living to do.

This afternoon I am to be evaluated for some balance rehab.

I am suspecting it may be related to my low potassium readings of the past

8 or 9 months. Rita

Congratulations!, Crystal,

Lowering your glucose levels takes time and practice. It took me around

three months before I mastered carb counting and medication dosing. I am on

insulin injections, so I don't know if a person being on oral medications

makes any difference or not on the amount of time it takes to master carb

consumption and glucose level control.

I do know that no matter how much time and effort it takes, it takes that

amount of time to do it.

Also, I equate carbohydrate withdrawal with alcohol withdrawal. Your body

does not like to do without it, but once it gets use to doing without it, it

feels much better.

I agree Harry. I would put money down that you would not need insulin injections

if you were carb counting and testing sugars. I believe you would have been fine

on oral medications had you been instructed what you know today.

excellent! I'm so glad she is finally seeing results. BTW you will feel like

you are low sugared even at 80 to 120 range since the body is so used to

running high sugars. It is a common physical condition, don't recall a name,

but when you get sugars under control, you will feel like you have a low

blood sugar in the range of 80 to 120 since you were running the 200 range

and possibly worse. However, after about 3 to 5 days, that goes away.

Harry,

Interesting that you should use the alcohol analogy. Perhaps that is why

I am so determined to see Crystal through this phase. You see, I was an

acute alcoholic for more than twenty years. I consumed more than a quart

of hard liquor each day and could not get out of bed in the morning

without a " little boost " .

Now, I do have an interesting little story about my kicking the habit.

Some missionaries came over to our home in 1990 and began talking with

us. Each time they came they would ask if there was anything they could

do to help our house. Finally, after several months of this my wife said

" Yes, there is something, could you pray for my husband who is an

alcoholic? "

They gave me a blessing. We talked for a moment or so afterwards and I

went into the kitchen to finish the glass of wine I was consuming before

they arrived. I put the glass to my lips and stopped. The contents no

longer smelled or tasted good to me and I poured it out. I lost all

desire for alcohol and, believe it or not, never had one minute's worth

of withdrawal problems. Hmm, wonder what happened?

Good going, Crystal! Keep at it, girl!

Re: Crystal

each meter has about a 10% difference in testing results so that is

normal really. Not certain about the oral medication, Harry can help you

with that one. Glad to hear her sugars are getting under better control!

Just check her sugar 2 hours past eating and if it is not 120 or less,

then cut some of her carb grams back for that meal. If you get her carbs

down and her sugars running 120 or less 2 hours past eating, you may not

need any oral meds.

Crystal

Hi , Harry and all,

I have two questions.

Crystal has a Glucometer Elite and an Ultra One Touch.

The Glucometer indicated a reading of 99 while the Ultra indicated

113.

How would one determine what is correct?

Second question.

We (the doctor and Crystal) discussed Actos. How does it work?

Crystal's readings are consistantly lower than they were a couple of

weeks ago - YEA! Thanks. The Ancient One...e

all I can say is what are the carbs? It doesn't matter the foods you eat as

long as you pay attention to the carbs. There is no reason to eat special

foods as a diabetic since now you are watching carbs. Special foods meaning

meal replacements for diabetics *wink*

Yes you are saying this to harp on us. (smile)

If you didn't harp we probably wouldn't listen. (just like my kids)

Crystal is doing well at church camp this week and I am really glad to

see that. She had a 68 this morning and that is GREAT...

It is great because she is continuing her regiment without my prodding -

YEA!!

Thanks, the Ancient One...

Re: Crystal

ya, the meter is the best weapon in this battle so keep on keeping on.

you guys are doing great. Just cut back carbs to get her 120 or less in

the afternoons. Have you limited her meals to a set amount of carbs? I.E

breakfast/lunch/dinner 30 grams each for a total of 90 grams a day? Or,

for example, 15 grams per meal breakfast/lunch/dinner for a total of 45

grams a day etc. If you get those constants in place, those constants

will help you iron out those high afternoon readings etc. The more

constants you can get in place, the easier it is to get that sugar in

target range.

I'm not sharing this to harp on ya, you guys are doing great! This is

just suggestive advice is all.

, Bacon, sausage or ham does not have any carbs. Carbs are found in

most white foods, anything made with flour even it it is not white and is

found in some vegetables. I can send you a list of carbs as an attachment

to your private e-mail if you would like.

Re: Crystal

Ancient one, can you give us an example of a good, low or no-carb meal? For

example, for breakfast do you cut out all meat such as sausage or bacon or

ham?

Thanks,

cv

Wow! What great news about Crystal! Keep at it girl!

Crystal

Hey All!

Crystal went to the doctor today and we have a new problem - low blood

sugar!!

The Doc said Crystal needs to start cutting back on the morning

Glucovance. Her morning readings are fairly consistent in the mid 60s

now. She will probably only need one of the Glucovance tablets when it

is this low. Her mid afternoon blood sugar is around 80 to 90 from time

to time.

Well, I guess youall were correct. We have been doing this for what,

about two or so months?

When we started Crystal was running in the high 400s and now look where

we are.

Count them carbs! It really does work!

Hey ,

So fruit is pretty much a no-no? I like to eat a lot of fresh fruit in the

summer such as watermelon, muskmelon, strawberries, and so on. Will I need

to cut them from my diet or try and figure them in as carbs?

I don't eat fruit nor fruit juice. You can get all the same exact nutrients

from vegetables as you do from fruit. And I am not kidding that is medical

fact. Fruit and fruit juice is deadly. If you can, or are up to it, I say

cut them. In 1 medium apple it is 30 grams of carbs, 1 cup of any cut up

melon is 30 grams of carbs, etc. very very potent. In addition to this, they

are very difficult to accurately measure since apples, melon, etc. are all

different shapes and density.

I suppose you could eat some fruit if you want but it would average about 30

grams of carbs, based on what you eat and how much you eat, which is half

your meal. If you want to eat some fruit, let me know what kind and I can

look at some carb grams on calorieking.com for you or the USDA database.

Also check out dean's carb list as well.

Like I said, main thing is fruit is very high carb and very difficult to

measure carb grams. Think of strawberries. All differently shaped etc.

Yes, if you can accurately come up with a way to measure the fruit you could

in theory count it as carbs in your diet and cover it with H. I just don't

fool with it since I can get all the nutrients from veggies and they really

can spike your sugar and so forth.

Crystal

Fruits and fruit juices are on the no no list for diabetics. This includes

all mellons, too. I eat a couple of strawberries cut up on my salad to add

some different flavor, but that is about it for me as far as fruits are

concerned. I avoid them mostly. If the food is white it is also a no no.

This includes milk and potatoes. Count those carbs. If you like I can send

you the carb counting guide file.

Lynda,

Well, Great Value frozen strawberries have 12 carbs in 3/4 cup. I don't

think we have a counter large enough to hold the number of carbs in a

ripe, delicious, sweet, cold and crisp piece of watermelon.

Could we interest you in some tasty cauliflower? What if it were dipped

in some Jalapeno cheese dip?
