,

I have taken Gualifenesen (now Mucinex) for years. I now take two in the morning and two at night. When I miss, I can tell it. Mucinex is taken when your cough is productive and your mucus is thick. It thins the mucus so that you can bring it up. Because I have developed Bronchiectasis, I have a real battle with keeping my lungs clear of mucus and infection. This works great! Bad part is that since they have began selling it OTC as Mucinex the insurance will not cover it. Instead of a $15 copay, it costs me upwards of $60. The only way that I can get it covered by insurance is to get it with a decongestant or suppressant. I don't want to take those on an every day basis.

If you are having an unproductive cough you may only need a suppressant at night. My doc prescribes Benzonatate (Tessalon Pearles) to suppress cough enough that I can sleep. Helps a little. Last night I coughed all night.

I know of no consequences of taking Mucinex long term. However, if you have congestion whether it be sinus or bronchial, it spells trouble for your lungs.....so important to keep your lungs clear of mucus and infection!

A long answer to a short question. Sorry .

Dear Joyce, Is NAC the same as Mucinex? Also, has anyone heard of an "Acapella" (not sure if the spelling is correct) I spoke to two people yesterday and they swear by it to get "stuff" up. I had never heard of it at all and then hear about it twice in one day. Leanne ipf 1/03Joyce wrote: , I have taken Gualifenesen (now Mucinex) for years. Leanne,

Mucinex is the old gualifenesen that has been around for a hundred years. It is an expectorant...thins mucus. Mucinex is the OTC of that. Acetylcystiene also thins mucus, but is primarily used in bronchial (lung) congestion. I use the prescription Acetylcysteine in my nebulizer. Brand name is Mucomyst. Two reasons that my doctor gives for using it in a nebulizer are: It is a prescription (unlike NAC) and is therefore a regulated drug. It is inhaled directly into the lungs....where the problem is!

From day one he has been agressive toward mucus in my lungs. Has instructed me how to spot infections and keeps me stocked in Levoquin to treat infections before they get a headway. He always told me that germs were my enemy and that each infection or pneumonia caused more scar tissue. When the Bronchiectasis was diagnosed, he became even more vigilant. He really listens to my symptoms and trusts me to know my body signals. Bronchiectasis patients usually have chronic infections and are on IV antibiotics most of the time. I have never been hospitalized since the diagnosis of Bronch and I have not had pneumonia. I attribute it to his aggressive treatment of both fibrosis and Bronch. I do postural drainage, vest percussion therapy, and nebulizers every day at least 4 times. I am also neurotic about bacteria.

The Acupella is used by almost every person on the Bronch support group that I am on. They all like the Acapella Choice. I am still using the Flutter Valve and it works. I am told that the Acupella requires less effort and is not so difficult to use. I am going to switch as soon as I can. When you hack and hack.....then use the flutter.....if there is mucus, it will come up. Any time that stuff is down there it is breeding something!! The docs told me that Bronchiectasis was somewhat common to end stage fibrosis. I just do not think docs look for it. Had my doc not specified that he was looking expressly for that it probably would have been overlooked.

Again, long answer to a short question. Hugs, Joyce PF 1997

Joyce,

This is really good information, thank you so much. It gives me some really good questions for when I see my pulmo later this month. I'm apprehensive about going into cold and flu season and this gives me several things to ask about. I want to proactive about keeping myself as clear as possible and preventing any kind of infection if at all possible.

Thanks for sharing!!

BethDraw close. Hold hands. Life is short. God is good.
