My daughter had a bad reaction to her 2 month shots that we thought might have been a seizure. We had to take her for a MRI and EEG. Both procedures required sedation. She was only 2 months old and I was very concerned. They used Chloral Hydrate to sedate her. When she had the MRI there was a nurse that was assigned to her. The nurse administered the sedative and kept changing her heart rate and pulse. She fell asleep quickly and slept for about 1 hour during the test and then woke up. Then we took the EEG at the Doctors office and the doctor administered the sedative and was there if for any reason we needed him. Thank god we didn't. He then waited for her to wake up and he checked her out to make sure she was fine. Thank god all tests came back normal and a seizure was ruled out. That is how we found out about the tort and then the plagio. I feel that the immunization situation was done so that we would go to a specialist and ultimately find out about the tort. I do not think our pediatrician would've noticed it. Just last month he said that he didn't think her head was so severe. So just make sure they monitor him and that someone responsible administers the sedative. Our original doctor gave me a prescription for Chloral Hydrate and wanted us to sedate her, I looked for a new doctor quickly. Any other questions just ask. I'll try to help you if I can. I know how hard this is for you.

I forgot to mention that my daughter handled it fine, she was just hungry and cranky, but she fell asleep immediately and woke up fine. No vomiting or anything. She ate soon after she woke up.

Hi there,

My son Jack went in to have this procedure done December 7th,2004. He was 4 months at the time and did require anesthesia. I was also very scared and apprehensive about sedating such a young child, but he did great. In the beginning he was cranky because we had to wait an extra hour before he was seen and you could tell he was starting to get hungry and tired but other than that all was fine. In our case the anesthetic that was used wore off very quickly. He woke up about an hour later and we were then told we could to feed him. We were allowed to take him home after he finished his bottle. I'd have to say that with the extra wait and all, it only took about five hours. And once we were home he was back to his chipper old self.

Hi, I'm new here and have a few questions. My 7 month old son will be going in for a Cat Scan this week. I'm pretty sure they're going to sedate him. Has anyone had this done before? Did your kids handle it ok? He can't have anything but apple juice to drink from 5am-9am the morning of the scan. He doesn't really like apple juice, so we'll see how that goes. :) I guess if he's hungry enough he'll drink it. Our appointment with a pediatric neurosurgeon isn't until Feb. 16th. So, I guess we won't know the results of the scan until then. Thanks in Advance,~SandyDex 6/17/04For more plagio info

anyway though. He was hungry when he started to come out of it and

took his bottle. They took his vitals again and we were free to go.

He was a little cranky from the medication, but within a couple hours

My son Tj (6 months) is having a CT scan tomorrow to rule out

craniosynotosis. I will let you know what happens. Our doc said no food/

formula/breast milk for four hours and clear liquids for 2 hours. I was

anticipating physical restraint, so I am glad to hear that it may be sedation

instead.

Sandy,

My son had a CT at 5 months old. I let them do it only if they

wouldn't have to sedate him. We made sure he was really sleepy and

gave him his pacifier. He got used to the noise of the machine and

actually went to sleep b/c he was so tired.

A few wks later we saw a specialist and had to have another CT. I

fought again against sedation. They were hesitant but put a little

sugar water on his pacifier and again, he was still.

The reason I was against sedation was my 4 yr old had his tonsils out

at 2.5 and the nurse over dosed him on Morphine and he stopped

breathing. I am a nurse and realized he was in trouble.

If your child does require sedation, make sure you have a nurse

present and a crash cart nearby. Don't give him any sedation at home.

I would recommend that you wake up in the middle of the night (8 hours

before your appt) and give him something to eat, this way he isn't as hungry

by the time they are going to sedate him-also try not to let him sleep as

much-as the sedation works better. I woke up at midnight with my child and

we had a little picnic and then I put her back to sleep.

Hope this helps,

Hi Sandy

I'm just catching up on posts, so if you've already posted about the

outcome sorry to ask again. How did it go? Will they give you the

results before your appointment, or is it pretty much locked to the

16th?

I think that this really depends on the doctor doing the test, the

radiologist actually. My son, who is now 20 months old has had both

the oral hydrate as well as iv. To be honest, the stuff through the

iv works best especially for an older child. Jax has had 4 ct scans

and 3 MRI's, they used the oral twice - once @ 18 months and once @

6 months. The 6 mo time was easy... he went right out. At 18 mo he

fought it, screamed, ended up throwing up the stuff a couple times.

It may go off the weight of the child and how active the child is,

too.

Good luck to you..

When my older daughter had her first ct scan at 12 months they gave her an oral med to knock her out. I am not sure what the name of it was, but they told me it was like an extra strong benadryl. It worked really well. When she had her second ct scan at 17 months of age they gave her the same thing and it worked well then too. The dose is based on their weight.

My daughter had to be in admitted to the hospital while they gave her the drug and then had to stay until she woke up afterward and they knew she could keep some food down and was able to move around some. Afterward she seemed almost like she was drunk and they advised me not to let her climb up on anything unattended as she was still wobbily and would be that way until the drug wore off completely. They released her the same afternoon both times.

I think a lot of what drug they give depends on the doc and anestheologist.

My son TJ had his CAT scan at 6 months without sedation. It only took 15

seconds. My

husband and I entertained him with a metal pinwheel and he happily sucked on a

pacifier

dipped in cherry syrup. He never made a peep. :)

Hello. My Daughter, , had a CT scan when she was 6 Months old

to rule out cranio before she got her Hanger Band. She was sedated

with an oral sedative and she was asleep within 10-15 minutes.

Sometimes this oral sedative doesn't always work as well for an older

baby, so I can't say that is necessarily what they will use on your

Son. Once my Daughter was asleep though the CT scan was over in just

a matter of minutes and then she came to, had to drink some juice and

then they released her from the Hospital. Good luck!

Hi,

My daughter was almost 11 months old when she had a CT scan to figure

out why she has a large head. We were very worried, but it all went

very well. She received the sedative via the rectum and fussed a

little bit and then fell asleep. They monitored all her vital signs

the entire time and my husband and I were able to be with her during

the whole process. She slept for about forty-five minutes after the CT

scan and then once she woke up and they took her vitals and we were

released to go home. She was pretty much herself the rest of the day.

We thought that she would be groggy, but she wasn't. The CT scan

itself doesn't take very long. I think it took less than five minutes.

As far as not eating, we just tried to keep her busy the entire

morning. If you can schedule for early in the morning, then you can

get up and take him right away. They do like infants to be drowsy so I

am not sure that they will schedule the appointment for early AM now

that I think about it. If the baby is drowsy they can use less sedative.

We were very nervous and very worried beforehand, but once the process

began it went much smoother than we anticipated. It was hard seeing

her sedated, but they took very good care of her at the hospital.

Good Luck and let us know how it goes.

My son Connor had a CT scan when he was 12 months. Before the scan

they checked his vitals, a doctor came in to check him out and then

they gave him an oral sedative. After the sedative kicked in (the

kind he had didn't actually knock him all the way out, although it was

supposed to) they did the scan. The scan itself only took a minute or

two. They took his vitals again and waited for the sedative to wear

off. I gave him a bottle as soon as he was awake enough and then we

were allowed to go home. It only took a couple of hours. By the

afternoon he was back to his old self.

Hi...I've had some problems lately with acid reflux and nausea, plus an

inabiliy to eat very much food. My surgeon is concerned things might be

" kinking " up from adhesions. He has ordered a CT scan with contrast.

Hopefully it will turn out to be nothing...I sure DO NOT want another

surgery. Prayers would be appreciated.

Much love.....

You are all so dear and a blessing in my life. Thank you. I have my

scan today at noon. I was just thinking that a year + ago it was

difficult to do some of those tests as my weight made it both

uncomfortable and in some cases impossible (because of size and weght

limits), That is not an issue now!

My surgeon has me coming in Monday to go over things with him.

Much love...
