Will someone explain exactly how this works, i.e., what do you do and how long

does it take;is it unpleasant? I don't know anything about them and see that I

can buy one online for $60.

I have an Acapella. Not sure if it is the same as a Flutter Valve but sounds like they work the same way. Mine is a plastic - bomb looking devise - [not to pack in suitcases, ha ha] of course non electrical or battery operated. Simple devise, The mouthpiece comes apart for easy cleaning and there is a measure turning switch on bottom, i.e., hard blow, medium blow, soft blow, etc. You suck into this thing and blow out slowly, coming up for air occasionally! I usually can do several in-out-in-outs ... you hear it "fluttering" which is basically tickling your lungs, shaking them up to loosen the phlegm. I was told to do 40 at a time then break, do another 40, etc. About 10-15 minutes or so. Hope this helps. No, they are not the same. A CF physiotherapist in Saskatoon and one of our local respiratory therapists told me that the Acapella actually works better than the flutter. The physiotherapist told me about a study done with people that had cystic fibrosis and I think non-CF bronch. and the Acapella came out a head. You can also use the Acapella in different positions during drainage. I find for myself that the Acapella works much better. I tired the flutter, but really did not care for it, but find the Acapella more helpful in helping me during airway clearance. Acapella can also be connected to a nebuliser (neb.) allowing us to do two treatments - breathing and clearance. The flutter looks like a small grey, but plump pipe - has a metal ball on the inside. Dear Austin, The flutter and Acapella are both airway clearance devices. Neither one will help break up the mucous, but the will help bring it up allowing your wife to cough it out more easily. A physiotherapist who specialized in working with respiratory patients and had an interest in bronchiectasis and cystic fibrosis told me that studies have shown the Acapella to be superior to the flutter. I have tried both and in my personal opinion the Acapella is better for me, however some people prefer the flutter or other devices. Acapella choice is the brand to get, because it can be sterilized. A respiratory therapist at out hospital gave me one for free. Acapella choice can also be connected to a nebulizer allowing us to take our bronchodilator (breathing treatment) and have airway clearance at the same time. This makes for an efficient and helpful device. One cannot do this with the flutter see flutter:

Hi nn-

Welcome to this wonderfully caring group. Can you ask your doc to call

the scipt into the medical supply company? My doc did this and they

delivered it to my house! The med supply co billed my insurance

directly so I didn't have to deal with it. You must live in a very

rural area is the pharmacy didn't tell you where you could get one. If

all else fails, there's always the good old internet!

Ellen

P.S. To everyone following my son . He has a follow up visit

with doc on Wed. I'll report back then.
