Guest guest
Hi I'm wondering about other peoples experiences traveling with Enbrel. I am taking a cruise in 2 weeks. I don't want to skip my dose of Enbrel and yet, I know it will be cumbersome to pack it. Has anybody else taken their Enbrel on a plane? Any advice or tips for me? Did you take along your sharps container too? All this is going to take up valuable luggage space! Helen
Guest guest
What a wonderful thing to do Helen, I hope you really enjoy your cruise. You might check with your contact at the cruise line to see what they suggest. I am sure they are used to this question with insulin and other medications needing to be refrigerated. For travel, I would suggest the smallest insulated lunch bag you can find with one of those refrezable chill things. Most important of all carry it with you. Get a note from your Doc that you are required to take an injectable medication and must have the syringe with you to take it so no one hassles you about the syringe. Guest guest
I have a similar problem. I am on Humira and going to Europe for 17 days. Fortunately, Humira is taken every 2 weeks so I will just have to be late in taking it. I would contact the cruise line and see what they can do to help. It can't be the first time someone has brought medications that require refrigeration and appropriate disposal. You can find cool packs for traveling with injections on line. Sorry, can't remember where I saw that. > Hi I'm wondering about other peoples experiences traveling with > Enbrel. I am taking a cruise in 2 weeks. Guest guest
When I was taking Enbrel they provided me with a travel cooler bag with a reuseable ice pack. I also have a travel sharps container called a shuttle. I would plane travel so there are no long layovers...Make sure you have a current copy of prescription on the medication container and you name and address on the cooler. They will of course want to search your things. I really never found it a big deal. I just put together a little travel kit and away I went. On one other thing you must take your med as carry on do not check it..incase it gets lost as well as they do not handle luggage well. The last option depending on the legnth of travel would be to switch to the once a week dose. I never took it as I stopped Enbrel before that formulation was released. The key thing is keeping it cold during travel. Another option if you are going to be gone a few weeks is to have your doc write you a prescription which you can fill when you get to the other end..or if you do mail order have them ship part of the RX to the other end. Guest guest
Helen, I found this website to be very helpful. I flew to Las Vegas 2 months ago and had the same concerns. As for the flying part, they actually have sharps containers in the bathrooms of the airplanes. I would think that the cruise ship would have a medical station where you could dispose of the sharps or even have them store it. I would check with the cruise line regarding that. It is recommended to take the meds with you in a carry on. That way you don't have to worry about the temperature changes in the cargo hold. When I talked with Enliven services about how long the Enbrel could be kept out unmixed, they told me up to 3 days. If you sign up for enliven services they will send you a small cooler that is easy to tuck away into a carry on....Marina http://www.tsa.gov/public/interapp/editorial/editorial_1059.xml > Hi I'm wondering about other peoples experiences traveling with > Enbrel. Guest guest
Thanks, everyone for your replies! Marina, that link was very helpful. I take the once a week dose and I have the insulated bag from Enliven services. I'm counting down - 13 days to go! > > Hi I'm wondering about other peoples experiences traveling with > > Enbrel. Guest guest
Helen, I was on a cruise in April. You will need a refrigerator in your room, so call the cruise line and tell them that you have medication that needs refrigeration. They will put a refrigerator in your room, which is handy for other things as well! I also had a special form to fill out because I was on injectable medications. They emailed me the form and I faxed it back to them. Then I carried the Enbrel in my carry on. I've flown with Enbrel and cruised with Enbrel and have had no problems. They are used to people traveling with injectable medication. Once you get on the ship and can put it in the refrigerator, you'll be able to relax and enjoy you trip. The ship provided me with a sharps container. What cruise line are you going on? I've been on Carnival, Norwegian and Royal Caribbean in the 8 years I've been on Enbrel, and have had no problems on any of them. This last cruise was the first time I had forms to fill out. Carnival was also the only one that provided the sharps container. a On Jun 11, 2005, at 9:19 AM, hpierce2 wrote: > Hi I'm wondering about other peoples experiences traveling with > Enbrel. Guest guest
Hi Helen, I just got back from a trip to Alaska. The first part was a cruise, and the second was on land. I also flew for the first time. I ordered a Frio wallet to carry my Enbrel in. I ordered the extra large, but I still had to disassemble the Enbrel to get four doses in. You put the wallet in cold water for 15 minutes, and the gel inside the cloth absorbs it. It stays cool inside for several days. Of course it took up valuable space in my carry-on luggage, and also added to the weight, but it certainly worked! I don't know how many days it takes to get back to its original form, because it still hasn't. I recommend it highly. The URL is http://frio.uk.com/ On the left side, click on " For US and outside the EU sales, " then on " Product Catalogue. " It will be shipped from the UK. It is pricey at $33, but worth every cent. The ship will provide a sharps container. You just have to ask for it. Enjoy your cruise. I certainly did. Guest guest
Hi, Helen, I went on a Caribbean cruise with Norwegian in Feb of 2003. I had asked for a refrigerator for my room, but it wasn't there when I arrived. In fact, it took a long time even after I called to inquire about it. This time the cruise line was Princess. All of the cabins had a refrigerator. But it took us a while to get to the ship. We went by bus from Lexington, NC, to Charlotte. We flew from there to Minneapolis, then from there to Seattle, where we spent the night. That room did not have a refrigerator. The next morning, we took a bus to Vancouver, where we boarded the ship. The cruise part lasted six days; then we went into the interior of Alaska by train and boat. We stayed in Princess lodges, and the rooms did not have refrigerators. Then we spent another night in Fairbanks, where we had no refrigerator. Even if there had been refrigerators, knowing me, I would have left my Enbrel in the one of those refrigerators, LOL. I'm glad I had the Frio, even though it did add to the weight of my carry-on bag. Feel free to ask me anything about either of my cruises. The food of course is wonderful, so try not to get too fat. There are plenty of activities to keep you busy. At night there are shows to attend. Sue On Monday, June 13, 2005, at 08:28 PM, hpierce2 wrote: > Thnks, Sue.
