This is what happened to me years ago. I thought that I was having bladder infections and was taking antibiotics for a long time off and on. I can't remember exactly when the VV started but I am convinced that the two are related and stemmed from all the antibiotics. It's really hard to believe how long it is taking the researchers to come to this conclusion!! I also fear that all the over the countere anti fungal creams are causing needless problems too. I am guilty myself of treating myself with over the counter creams ( in the past) and I am sure many feel why go to the doctor when you are burning, it must be yeast and then the cycle begins. Please everyone that is reading this, always always have your urine cultured before you take an antibiotic that could make you worse off than before. Thanks Robin! Guest guest
Ann, If you've taken lots of antibiotics and get temporary relief from OTC yeast creams, then I'll bet your problem is at least partially yeast. Not only that, the external yeast symptoms you're having really lead me to believe yeast is a factor. I would get those itchy rashes that looked like little red pimples occasionally on my back and arms. And although your doctor really should be paying attention to yeast, it sounds to me like he/she is ignoring it. The cycle began for me by being overtreated with antibiotics which caused the cyclical yeast problem I had. At first the OTC antifungals worked for me but after overusing those they no longer were effective. Not only that, I had a non-albicans yeast infection and the OTC creams are for albicans yeast. I've seen this pattern over and over again in women's stories on the list. They're being treated for one condition with antibiotics when their vulvar pain begins. That's what I think the link is between IC and vulvodynia. I think there's a lot of misdiagnosed bladder infections out there and women are being treated unnecessarily with antibiotics and thus the cycle begins. Just my .02. Robin Time: 9:41 AM OFFICE MEMO frustration and yeast Date: 6/24/99 First of all --Heidi! You sound in good spirits but geez. You just remind me how terribly this interrupts life, and the hardships of getting proper attention and treatment. I want to vent about my doctor too. His nurses always say " I'm sure the doctor won't allow you to be in this much pain, he'll call you today " - not. Meanwhile I once called him and named it an emergency (and I am not a drama queen) and didn't hear from him for 2 weeks. He said when he has babies to deliver I'm on hold. Since what, after all I'm ALWAYS in pain!? He's also the one who is convinced about TCA and that is not working for me. I am convinced of yeast and he is reluctant to discuss this. So next I see him I will tell him to have his nurses deliver proper expectations, and if I am a back burner type of patient then I'm not in the right practice and he shouldn't treat me. I need to be able to keep in touch with my doctor in an ongoing pain situation especially where he is prescribing meds and meds that I have trouble with to boot. As for yeast, OTC yeast cream is the only thing helping me, always provides temporary relief, the no sugar diet helped me markedly and I had a flare after some ice cream, and I wake up ITCHING all over the area. When I feel the itching, I know it will travel and I'll be having a bad day with burning and UTI feelings. All my life yeast and UTI symptoms go hand in hand, yeast must get into the urinary tract. I have a long antibiotic history and even get yeast skin problems on my chest and neck. So he really has to pay attention to yeast. I already have an appointment with a 2nd opinion specialist but think it will be good for me to say these things to him. I too wish he could feel this for one hour and see him try to live his life. Ok that's my rant, thanks you all, Ann ---------------------------
