Hi There,

Spiriva (Tiotropium Bromide) and Serevent (Salmeterol)

are not the same respiratory medications. Doctors

commonly prescribe both meds., because each has a

different mechanism of working.

Three groups of bronchodilators include:

1.beta2-agonists … Include short-acting

bronchodilators such as Ventolin, and long-acting

types such as Serevent.

2. anticholinergics: Include shorter acting Atrovent

(Ipratropium Bromide), and longer-acting Spiriva

3. xanthines … An example is Theophylline … This

group of bronchodiators has fallen out of favour and

is often no longer prescribed.

The following website describes these groups:

http://www.lung.ca/diseases-maladies/copd-mpoc/treatment-traitement/medications-\

medicaments_e.php

Sometimes a combination … long-acting bronchodilator

is combined with a corticosteriod (anti-inflammatory)

e.g. Advair (fluticasone propionate and salmeterol).

Also, see…

I take Spiriva, Advair Diskus inhaler, and various

other meds. So far, the Spiriva is convenient, but has

not made much of a dent in my lung condition. Have now

been on it for a full month, however Spiriva is

helpful for many people.
