Guest guest
Hi Rita. Hey, I got a great idea. Lets do it on list. How about we all start posting foods we like and we can look up the carb info online. Someone on the list keep a master text file or word doc of the foods and carb grams as we post them and over time, we can have a great text file/word doc for blind diabetics! So, lets start, what types of foods do people want to know carb grams for? I'd suggest to keep all posts about this in this thread and don't start a new thread on it. Reason? So we can easily track/keep record of the foods and carb grams. Who on list wants to keep the text file for us? counting carbs is vital > Hello Listers, > > For those of us who want to drop weight, counting caarbs is vital also. > So why can we not find a carb counter in braille? > This is not a topic easily handled on tape. > > Rita >
Guest guest
Oh this would be great! Will it then be in plain text? My computer skills are so so limited. Not too bright I guess. Guest guest
I would keep a master list, but I am going out of town on a cruise for a couple of weeks. So I hope some body does keep a master list. Keep this message thread going. counting carbs is vital > > > > Hello Listers, > > > > For those of us who want to drop weight, counting caarbs is vital also. > > So why can we not find a carb counter in braille? > > This is not a topic easily handled on tape. > > > > Rita > > > > > >
Guest guest
sure, we can make it in a text file, carb grams.txt, or some such file that will be in plain text so you can read it. counting carbs is vital > > > > > > > Hello Listers, > > > > > > For those of us who want to drop weight, counting caarbs is vital also. > > > So why can we not find a carb counter in braille? > > > This is not a topic easily handled on tape. > > > > > > Rita > > > > > > > > > > >

Guest guest
Aren't these htings listed in the text file I sent to you from the USDA? Dean counting carbs is vital > > > > > > > Hello Listers, > > > > > > For those of us who want to drop weight, counting caarbs is vital also. > > > So why can we not find a carb counter in braille? > > > This is not a topic easily handled on tape. > > > > > > Rita > > > > > > > > > > >
Guest guest
The ones I got from you seemed to be in some kind of spreadsheet format, but I may be wrong about this. After several attempts I was able to convert the file you sent into a plain text format without all those columns and rows. It takes a lot of trial and error to read the carb count and the named food. It would be nice to have a named food followed by the amount and the carb count all on one line. If not on one line, at least the named food followed on the next line by the amount of this food and the carb count and not all that other stuff like protein, minerals, fat, and .etc.. IMO counting carbs is vital > > > > > > > > > > Hello Listers, > > > > > > > > For those of us who want to drop weight, counting caarbs is vital > also. > > > > So why can we not find a carb counter in braille? > > > > This is not a topic easily handled on tape. > > > > > > > > Rita > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >
Guest guest
ah, that's right. Dean did send a carb count text file to several so come to think of it, there probably isn't a reason to do this on list. Dean, perhaps paste in all the info from the text file into a new message and post it to the list so the archives will have it for new comers to find. Perhaps make the subject " complete list of foods and carb grams " or some such thing? regards, counting carbs is vital > > > > > > > > > > Hello Listers, > > > > > > > > For those of us who want to drop weight, counting caarbs is vital > also. > > > > So why can we not find a carb counter in braille? > > > > This is not a topic easily handled on tape. > > > > > > > > Rita > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >
Guest guest
I'll do that. I don't remember there being the number of proteins, etc. in this text file, though. It was a little difficult to follow. Maybe I could clean it up some and send it. Guest guest
Hi Dean and List, Well Dean just now I do not recall if either I did not receive it, or did not know how to access it, or did not realize then just how vital carb counting is. However, perhaps you could either resend to myself or the whole list. I may need to discuss with someone how to open this on dos. Thank you Dean. Guest guest
harry, I am slowly making up such a list for the diabetic eeducation class I am co-teaching with a doc. when it is done, I will put it in an E-mail to the list as I don't think the list wil allow attachments. It may be a couple more weeks, however. Re: counting carbs is vital The ones I got from you seemed to be in some kind of spreadsheet format, but I may be wrong about this. Guest guest
, That would be great! Put those students to work. I would imagine there are several of them that are over weight and could learn how to do some carb counting. I will be looking forward to seeing it posted in the next few weeks. counting carbs is vital > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hello Listers, > > > > > > > > > > For those of us who want to drop weight, counting caarbs is vital > > also. > > > > > So why can we not find a carb counter in braille? > > > > > This is not a topic easily handled on tape. > > > > > > > > > > Rita > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >
Guest guest
ly, every student in the class is overweight-some of them grossly so! there is, interestingly, a non-diabetic in the class who has a high rate of diabetes in her family and she has joined the class to loose weight-and she has lost 33 pounds in 4 months! Some people are more motivated than others. (She is blind due to macular degeneration) Re: counting carbs is vital , That would be great! Put those students to work. Guest guest
Oh Pat that would be wonderful and so easy to access. Thank you so much. Yes, you are right about attachments. Not sure, but I think most of yahoo does not permits attachments. Guest guest
hold off Pat. I have a database of foods/carb counts and am working on getting a query developed that will extract the name of the food, portion size, and then the carb grams. It will look like: apple, 2 inch by 2 inch raw, 25 broccolis, 1 cup, 6 ..... this won't be done for a week or so but just wanted to let everyone know it is coming. regards, counting carbs is vital > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hello Listers, > > > > > > > > > > > > For those of us who want to drop weight, counting caarbs is vital > > > also. > > > > > > So why can we not find a carb counter in braille? > > > > > > This is not a topic easily handled on tape. > > > > > > > > > > > > Rita > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >

Guest guest
I started redoing the list I sent. It will contain the item, some brand names, the weight in grams, the serving size and the grams of carbs. After working on it manually for a few hours last night I came up with a script so JAWS can do most of the work for me. Itried it this morning before coming to work. I am up to the foods starting with the letter " f " . maybe I will be done by this weekend and will paste what I get into an e-mail. then everyone can save it in whatever kind of file they want. Guest guest
Thanks, . That will save duplication-and save me from hours on the computer as i don't have the knowledge to do it as quickly as you! Wish you lived closer-I would pay to take lessons!
