Annette says: >>My 2008 prediction, fwiw: Hillary vs. McCain. I will have to swallow hard and vote the favorite son.<< --Am I the only person who likes both of them? I'd vote for a McCain-Clinton ticket (or vice versa) with no regrets. I suppose Hillary carries the "witch" projection for anyone on the Right, but if she brushes it off gracefully she'll come out looking far better than the people who demonize her. And McCain seems reasonable and willing to work with people the Bush cabal locks out. Anyone that high up the pyramid is going to seem power-hungry or hypocritical to some degree (especially to opponents projecting their own power drive), but they both seem ahead of the curve as far as I can tell. Demonizing Hillary is one of those cottage industries that likely has an unstable half-life, since it depends on people seeing her as an archetype ("She's a witch! Look at her nose!" "Did you dress her

up as a witch?" "...a bit.") rather than as a human being. All she has to do is appear more human than the image of her in the minds of swing voters, which I think would be relatively easy if she relies on halfway sane consultants for advice. That's assuming Democrats can come up with a good strategy for terrorism and avoid the accusation of spinelessness, etc. Bush's approval ratings will be low, and that my or may not stain his party by association, but Democrats still have to figure out how to reassure the public they won't throw their hands up and invite terrorists to deliver God's wrath. A stupid accusation, since prominent Democrats tend to be fairly conservative about the war. But it's all about the war of perceptions, and public mythology tends to follow a pendulum swing from left to right and back, and we're entering the leftward swing. Even if a Republican wins, he will have to adapt to public opinion and be willing to take a stand against corruption in his

own party. He won't be able to play to Bush's base, and will have to appeal to moderate Democrats. So I think we're in a better position in terms of leadership, either way, once Bush is out of office.
