I just got the results back from my sputum culture. It says the tests detected something called Rhizopus species.

My pulm said he isnt concerned. When I googled it, not knowing what I'm reading..it stated sometimes fatal to humans.

Does anyone know about such a thing?

Thanks

I have bronchiectasis. Have been found to have a fungus. I coughed up

blood, was treated with antibiotics. Lung doc says not to worry, as

my bronchiectasis is minimal.

A year ago, I had a bronchoscopy/lavage. I was told that

Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria was found in my lungs. Again the

respirologist repeated not to worry, most people with bronchiectasis

have either a fungus or the above mentioned bacteria in their lungs. I

haven't heard anyone in this group with S.pneumoniae b.

Not to worry, but I worry.

Karin,

It is so interesting to hear what all these doctors have to say. I don't know

if two of them have said the same thing yet. The doctor who diagnosed my

bronchiectasis, after I sought help elsewhere for a year coughing my head off

and suffering 3 bouts of pneumonia and broken ribs, told me it could be from

being a smoker many years ago,a virus, environmental (I worked right across the

river from Ground Zero). He also told me it would never get better as there was

an anatomical change in my lungs. He prescribed prophyactic antibiotics which I

take 3 days per week. They never found anything after many sputum tests and a

bronchoscopy. So, here I am a year later, still coughing though not as much.

But now I do postural drainage.

Hi everyone. I just got back from 2 weeks in SUNNY Florida. It was

wonderful!!! Has anyone else had an open lung biopsy? I had one in

March of 06. Also,....what is the test for asthma?? I have always been

told I have asthma and have never had an attack. Does anyone know the

name of the test??

Thanks!

Hi Karin, Sounds like we got the same word. The doc said I tested positive for aspergillus fungus but not to worry. He has 2 other patients with the same thing and recommended they we change our furnace filters at least once every 2 weeks, wearing a mask while we do it. It helps keep the gunk out of the air. I had a bad bout a few weeks ago, I work in a school, and they decided it was RSV from hanging out with preschool kids. I'm an administrator. So now I try to wash my hands more often. I cough up blood, between my shoulder blades aches, and I can barely get up and walk around when I have it for a couple of week, otherwise I exercise every day (try to go for 30 minutes on the treadmill) and feel fine.

I don't even cough. I am also 56 and living in Iowa.
