Another New " Miracle " MS Drug?

Nearly 350,000 people in the United States suffer from multiple sclerosis (MS),

a disease that attacks the central nervous system that can have the following

damaging effects:

Fatigue

Numbness

Blurred vision

Loss of muscular coordination

With such a large portion of Americans affected by this serious disease, it is

evident that a trust-worthy treatment for it is long overdue. In light of this

concern, drug makers have attempted to develop what they believe to be another

effective way to empty your pocketbooks directly or indirectly through your

insurance company: Tysabri.

The drug, formerly known as Antegren, took on the new name after receiving the

Food and Drug Administration's premature approval. Although only the first year

of the two-year clinical studies for the drug were completed, the results from

the first year were, apparently, promising enough. The results showed that MS

patients who took Tysabri for one year had a 66 percent reduction in relapses

compared to those who took a placebo. This is in contrast to the 30 percent to

35 percent reduction in relapses experienced with MS products already on the

market.

Tysabri is a specific type of drug known as a monoclonal antibody, meaning it is

derived from a mouse antibody that has been genetically engineered to mirror a

human antibody (antibodies are proteins that help the body fight infection.)

Once the drug has been infused, the antibodies bind to immune system cells,

inhibiting them from crossing over from the bloodstream to the brain.

However, if destructive immune system cells break free of the bloodstream, they

can reach the brain, gastrointestinal tract and joints and cause severe damage.

Tysabri is expected to bring in $2 billion in annual sales within a few years.

Dr. Mercola's Comment:

Here we go again. Another expensive drug solution that in no way, shape or form

addresses the underlying cause of the problem, but does an incredible job of

lining the pockets of the drug companies that developed it.

I find this particularly tragic in light of the fact that there are so many

effective NATURAL strategies that work well for MS.

First of all, if you suffer from MS (or know someone who does) it is imperative

to have your vitamin D blood levels checked; it is important to receive adequate

amounts of vitamin D, as it keeps your cell growth and activity in check.

When the body is deficient in this crucial nutrient -- best known for coming

from sunlight -- cells can go haywire, become overly active or multiply too

quickly.

However, especially during the winter months, getting the optimal amount of

vitamin D from sunlight may be a difficult task (even in the summer months many

people now spend their days indoors and aren't exposed to the sun). That is why

I recommend consuming high-quality cod liver oil, as it is full of beneficial

omega-3 fats and vitamin D, which are absolutely necessary in the prevention and

treatment of MS.

Therefore, when choosing your cod liver oil, be sure to choose a brand that has

been purified of mercury and other toxins, and has the independent laboratory

testing to prove it. Additionally, you will also want to make certain that it

has more than insignificant quantities of vitamin E. Most manufacturers put only

enough vitamin E to prevent the omega-3 fats from being oxidized while in the

bottle. Once you swallow the liquid you will need about ten as many vitamin as

most manufacturers put in their formulas. You could easily compensate for this

by taking some extra vitamin E, but Carlson cod liver and fish oils are one of

the few that put the extra vitamin E for you in right from the get go. By doing

so you don't have to take extra vitamin E if you don't want to.

You can get Carlson's fish oil in many health food stores and we also offer it

on our site. I strongly recommend it because its high quality, superior purity

and freshness have been proven here in my clinic. You can find the Carlson's

fish oil/cod liver oil in my " Recommended Products " section.

Finally, in my experience with MS patients there is nearly always a

precipitating traumatic emotional event that causes the immune system to crash.

Clearly, issues related to this event need to be addressed. Fortunately, there

are tools to help you do just that.

Many of you know that I use the energy psychology tool known as the Emotional

Freedom Technique (EFT), personally and in my practice, for this purpose.

However, because MS is such a serious challenge I would NOT ADVISE using EFT for

MS by yourself but rather as a supplement to work with a trained EFT

practitioner.

I suggest taking a look at Dr. Carrington's guidelines on selecting an EFT

therapist followed by a list of EFT practitioners throughout the United States

and world. Many of these therapists even offer a free 15-minute phone session in

which you can ask them questions to see if you connect.
