Guest guest Posted November 29, 2006 Report Share Posted November 29, 2006 I will quality my reply that this is my opinion....but....I also am plagued with sinus infections as a complication of bronc. My ENT guy sees me once maybe twice a year, the rest of the time I call the office, tell him I have a sinus infection, he calls in Livequin (sp?) for 14 days and that takes care of it. I usually get a sinus infection every 9 - 12 weeks. It is a pain, literally, but after he requested my records from my Pul. Doc. he realizes this is not a structural problem that surgery can repair. I do have a question...Several posts ago folks were talking about blowing your nose the right way....what does that mean? Perhaps I'm doing it the wrong way.....Anyway, when I start to feel a sinus infection I use my handy water pic set on low with warm sailine and flush out the sinuses. Sometimes this will do the trick and prevent me from meds. This was suggested by my allergist YEARS ago. But warning, use only saline and the very lowest setting, and only once or at most twice a day. That is my opinion.,Janet Duhe wrote: Hi. My ENT is part of my health maintenance organization and had my complete - huge - file in front of him when I saw him for the first time Monday. So he knew all about my other ailments which is probably why he didn't want to ply me with more medicines. Said stay on my usual course of antibiotics for my current flareup, which *may* help the sinus problem. The biggest problem is my deafness of course ... with water built up in my eardrum in my "good" hearing ear, I hear nothing but muffled sounds. ENT says he wants me to try and put up with it [my words] for at least 3 weeks until I see him again. He does suggest ear tubes to drain the water. I read somewhere that a CT scan might be necessary too to make sure nothing else is going on .. I will suggest that when I see him. I have also tried the Sinus nose wash method and am taking decongestants 3x a day but thus far nothing is working. Meanwhile, I am trying to cope by turning up the volume on the radio, television, etc, and ask people to face me as they talk and to talk loudly! My boss isn't amused! I am truly miserable and this is such a rotten time of year to be struck deaf .. I love hearing all the Christmas music! Am supposed to go to a sing a long to the Handles Messiah this Sunday .. I bought the kit " SinuCleanse " from Walgreen's. It comes with packets of solution for it. I cleanse my sinuses once in the morning and when I go to bed. I'm not saying it cures it, but it has helped me trendously. You have to keep your sinuses clean so I guess in a way, you are doing it with your water pic. Long story, don't ask. But now I have a humming in my ear..sounds vibrate causing discomfort, but not pain. I, too, can HEAR but it's muffled and sometimes tinny and I have that congested feeling and pressure in the ear..again, uncomfortable, but not painful. Just plain irritating. I hear myself talking inside my head, like when you have a terrible cold. I went to the ER. I thought I perpherated my ear drum, but the dr says not. She said she saw fluid behind my ears and suggested Nasonex. I told her I already have Flonase, but havent been using it. She said these nasal sprays help w/the fluid buildup..so I'm back to using it, starting today. Besides bronchiectas, they diagnosed me with ABPA and I am on Vfend. I am not really coughing, I don't have a sinus infection right now. I have some wheezing, sore throat and shortness of breath sometimes. I am tired all the time and just feel plain awful. I am questioning if the medicine I am on is correct. I am going to the pharmacy at my clinic tomorrow and will ask about it. Meantime I was told to continue taking my decongestant [not antihistimine] and to continue on my antibiotics which I'm currently taking for my bronc flareup. So sorry. I don't know about Nasonex since I've never used it. Iam tired all the time and just feel plain awful.I am questioning if the medicine I am on is correct.Anyone else taking any of these things?Barbara Hi Barbara..sorry you're feeling so awful..I can empathize..I have more than just Bronchiactasis ( Alpha1 Antitrypsin Deficiency, lung symptomatic) and I usually feel awful all of the time. I related totally to being SOB. The wheezing is coming from not getting that junk out of your chest. Try something like Mucinex..that's OTC and more expensive than I can afford. you can also get a script for a med that does the same thing from your dr..if you have an insurance plan that will help a lot to get the script med instead. Sorry..I'm so preoccupied, I forgot what the meds called ( to bring up that phlem, which causes the wheezing) but your dr will know. Getting that junk out of your lungs will also help with being SOB.. Have you been dx'd w/any other lung probs other than Bronchiactasis? COPD? Emphysema? Just wondering since those are two lung diseases which could ..not ARE..but could be contributing to your being SOB and feeling awful. What meds are you on..any inhalers? Well that is the problem for both of us, water behind the eardrum! My ENT told me that it could take up to three months to clear out! Too long for me as I only hear out of one ear anyway and find it difficult to run the family alone, drive and work! He did suggest draining the fluid from the Eustachian Tube [that's where the water luies] by placing a tube through the eardrum to the E tube and allowing the air to flow more freely. It is a simply op but always a risk so he wants me to wait as long as I can so that it can clear up "naturally" ... your doctor mentioned Nasonex and Flonase. Can you buy these over the counter? It did take about 2 months to clear out the ear congestion. I have constant ocean sounds in my right ear, (yes I know I do live by the ocean but that is not what it is!). I wasn't aware these ear congestion problems were a complication of the bronc. Duh, the ears, nose and throat are all connected....I think all these meds are sucking my brains out. I take the 12 hour tab in the a.m. and one in the p.m. They when I go to bed I take a Tylenol PM and that helps ease me to sleep unti 4 a.m. when I wake.
