Guest guest
To the Editor: Here is something most of us take for granted but perhaps, given the daily ghastly news , we should be more conscious of and take grateful pride in. Something , for the privilege of which, thousands of lives have been given throughout history: every Saturday the Berkshire Eagle prints a page announcing the various religious services in our area. I suggest today taking a closer and appreciative look at it (on p. ).. There you will find a generous variety of religions and denominations, all side by side, in peaceful array. Everyday we witness accounts of temples, mosques, and churches being furiously attacked and destroyed in so many parts of the world. By contrast. I find we offer a quiet example of tolerance, wisdom and commonsense. We demonstrate one of the great Four Freedoms: Freedom of Worship. The subtle and increasing rumors of a rising tide of monolithic theocracy in our country known as fundamentalism gives one pause. "Either you are my friend or foe!" as proclaimed by one of them should give us the willies! That little word or instantly divides us. We need to say and! Let us remember that we can be Christians and Jews and Buddhists and Muslims and, above all, let us mutually respect the sense for the sacred that we all share. Alas, "Heaven is spread upon the earth but men do not see it." Sincerely, Alice.O. Howell
