Guest guest
Dear JiLL: Please be careful with the prednisone. It can cause all kinds of side effects. Especially to your bones. I have been on it a long time and now I can't get off of it. If I try to stop taking it I can't walk. It has effected my teeth, my jaw bones, my appearance, my back, I have a hump back, I have very bad bones because of it. My eyes are effected also. I have to have cataract surgery soon. I have loss bone everywhere, my height is now 5'1 " after alwaays being 5'3 " . Prednisone is a dangerous medicine. Tell your Dr you don't want it and let him put you on pain medicine. It is much safer. If he won't do go to someone else. There are Doctors out there that would rather give their patients pain meds instead of prednisone, you just have to find them. Prednsone destroys your body. My Doctor knows it now but it is too late to do anything about all my symptoms. However, he realizes now that I have to have pain medicatiion. I use dilaudid and duragesic pain patches and I am comfortable. Good luck. Colletti Anjillah@...

Guest guest
Hi All, I am very new to this group but found 's warnings about prednisone to be of interest. I was diagnosed with RA in november of 2004 and my reumy put me on prednisone 5mg as well as plaquelin and voltaren. I told him I did not want the prednisone at all but he insisted for " a few months " until the voltaren took effect. well, I just went off the prednisone myself last friday and boy am I paying for it. Most days I feel like crying I am in so much pain. I will not give in though. I was my doc on Monday and he was annoyed I went off the prednisone and refused some other treatments due to the fact that I would have to have my liver and kidneys checked every few months. Even though I told him what terrible pain I was in all he did was give me some pain medication and send me out the door. Well, needless to say, I am finding a new doctor. In the meantime, how do you cope? I am at the end of my rope but do not want to give in. , I am so sorry to hear waht prednisone has done to you. I had not heard any of those things about the drug when my doctor prescribed them but you can bet I will not be taking that drug again. Take care sandie

Guest guest
Hi Corinne, I have to agree with you about the Prednisone. All of these drugs can come with terrible side effects, just read the product information. For some, like myself, Prednisone has been a lifesaver. Without it, I don't know if I would be able to get around at all. Yes, we are adding to it and weaning me off it, but without it temporarily my life would be even more restricted and disabling than it already is which is pretty hard to imagine, but at least I can move around a little. So be careful about that word dangerious because it probably can apply to almost all of our meds:o) Hugs, Tracie Re: [ ] Nina- Pain & Complaining Hi , I hear your grief with the prednisone but to some people it is a life saver!...Prednisone is one of those drugs that are horrible to some but a miracle to others......I am sorry it isn't working for you, but maybe we should not voice such strong opinions " I just mean when you say that it is a dangerous drug " for those of us that have to take it.........All medications have some form of bad reaction to some people but not all. There are definitely side effects with Prednisone, especially with long term use. However, to tell someone to not take it, but to go on pain medication (which have their own side effects including addiction), seems a bit harsh to me. Guest guest
Sandie, I just re-read your message. Did you quit the pred cold turkey without tapering off? If so, that may be why the doc was angry. It's a med that you're supposed to taper off over the course of months. When I went off, it was 5mgs one month, 4 the next, 3 the next, etc. It was hard but not unbearable. I once went off Mtx by myself in my enthusiasm to try to get pregnant, and my kindly doc was PO'd. Just thought I should point that out after all my ranting ;-) Sharon > > Hi All, > I am very new to this group but found 's warnings about prednisone to > be of interest. Guest guest
Nina, I did go off the prednisone cold turkey. I did not know that you had to taper off the drug and y doc did not even mentionit. I went off it last friday and saw the doc on Monday. Even then he did not suggest I should taper. When in his office I actually pleaded with him to help me I was in so much pain. He gave me a script for a pain medication and told me I could take tylenol. I dont know about you but tylenol. motrin, aleve do not do a thing for me and I had told him that in the past. Now that I had xrays done I will have copies of them sent to my pcp and then hopefully all will be sent to my new rheumatologist. I guess that explains my terrible pain, I thought it was another flare up. I am hoping to get through this without going back on the meds. I would like to try some of the non steroid meds out there, I do know they all have risks but I am hoping some weight loss will also aleve some of my pain. Since being diagnosed with RA I have been doing a walking exercise tape at least 4-5 times a week. I can do a mile and a half at a time. Then I totally changed my eating habits, drink 10 glasses of water daily eat more fruits and veggies. All in all trying to help myself. THis stupid doc actually told me on my previous visit he wanted me to stay on the meds i was on and see how many flare ups I had. Then this visit he didnt even ask about the flare ups but I told him. I also told him I have had plurisy 3 times in the last 2 years 2 of the times in the last 6 months. That also didnt even get a response out of him. I also told him I am not trying to have another problem( Lupus) but with those facts and also my mother having lupus it is something to explore further. He told me there is no chance i have lupus and to be 100 percent sure he would need to take a skin sample from my face and have it tested. I know from my Mother that it doesnt always show up in blood tests but that you can still have Lupus. All in all I guess I have to do alot more research on what RA is since I am not getting anywhere with the doc. Today I am in such terrible pain I feel like crying. But, with 2 babies at home I have to keep going. Hope you are doing ok. and thanks for all the info. sandie

Did you quit the pred cold turkey without tapering off? If so, that may be why the doc was angry. It's a med that you're supposed to taper off over the course of months. When I went off, it was 5mgs one month, 4 the next, 3 the next, etc. It was hard but not unbearable. When I taper, I do it at 2.5 mg a week. Of course, I started at 40 mg. a day. When I got down to 5 mg. I flared big time and had to go back up to 20. Now I'm at 10 and I already feel the difference. The tapering plan was approved by both my rheumy and my PCP. I did not know that you had to taper off the drug and y doc did not even mentionit. I went off it last friday and saw the doc on Monday. You need to get back on it ASAP and taper off. You can die from just stopping cold turkey, depending on the dosage you were on. When you take Prednisone, your adrenal glands stop working. You wean off it to get the adrenal glands working again. If they aren't working, you could suffer heart failure. Nina
